It seems as if the true wing player is a dying breed. Who would you like on your flanks to give you width? I would have Ribery on the left and Arshavin on the right. It could be argued they are more striking, attacking players but they could both be great outside midfielders and they do bring width into a match. Who would you pick and why?
Who would you choose instead Vonramussen? I guess they are very attacking wingers but I think they could be considered wingers, why don't you think so?
Definitely Ronaldo. Maybe Ronaldo on the right and Messi on the left (although he mostly play right.) That would form a perfect wing, like that the striker wouldn't even have to worry getting the ball or not
Me I would have Ribéry on the left and Messi on the right ! Ribéry can make the difference any time; he's fast, creative and he is a team player. On the other hand Messi actually has the best offensive game.... Future "Ballon d'or" !
Ya it is very hard to put your finger on the modern winger, they are very much like strikers. Ronaldo started off as a winger but grew into more of a striker, along with Messi. David Silva is a good example of a true wing player can we all agree on that?
If you want a winger look at guys like Lennon. Men who use their speed to create opportunities (especially crosses) for their team to score. They might not be the most exciting but they do what they're supposed to do.
How bout Raphael and Fabio? Defensive wingers are crazy cool!
I think Lennon Walcott and Ashley Young are all very exciting to watch, along with Wright Phillips. They all have blazing speed and can take on defenders while playing in dangerous balls into the area that trouble defenders and usually present attackers with something to work with, all great football. I think Walcott is the best of the lot of them, his raw speed is incredible and he also has a knack at stepping up in big situations(when he almost gave me a heart attack by taking on every Liverpool player and making a perfect pass to Adebayor to tie the game 2 years ago in the Champions).
All great picks for real, top class wingers though
Dani Alves is my favorite defensive winger to watch, reminds me so much of Roberto Carlos. Always getting forward and never getting back in time haha. He can take a blistering free kick as well, not as hard of Carlos of course (wasn't he banned from taking pks from the spot because he was breaking goalies hands)?
Same with you, But I Think Lennon is slightly better than the rest. They're all great and worthy of an England spot I think But Here you have Walcott with the raw speed A Young with Better Ball control But Lennon could be the fastest in the world, and he can run with the ball at amazing pace and speed up while he's beating someone. Lol Yea I remember Walcott doing that that was crazy
My Favorite wing back to watch would be Sergio Ramos I think If I have Rb and Lb on my team I think they should have good attacking quality. Dani Alves would be my second Fave. Sergio Ramos slide tackles and wins at the back and gets forward. Did you see him in Euro 2008 He beat like Three people with step overs and spins (yea I don't know if he was Rari?)
Hopefully Robben and Ribery they play similar. Trust me If Ribery stays(or he could come to Chelsea)I would be the best wing combo since Cafu and Carlos. Did you guys see the highlights? If not....
It really is pretty hard to define a real winger in today's game, Messi and Ronaldo are very much like strikers. Lennon and Joauqin Sanchez and Nakumara define what it is for me today
I would say Ribery and Robben are certainly closer to being true wingers than Messi and Ronaldo. It's all just a matter of opinion of course, but I think Ribery and Robben are a hybrid between winger and attacker, where as Messi and Ronaldo have become more pure strikers over time. Players like Arshavin, Mancini, Malouda and many others fall under that hybrid category for me. And they are of course amazing players, with versatile skills that allow them to play so freely.
But like I said it is all a matter of opinion if you think they are more like strikers or wingers
When he and Dani Alves where both on that right side they tore teams apart, he certainly has a lot of skill and speed. But I haven't seem him for a while, he has kind of faded away a little bit, ya? Like my boy Joaquin Sanchez, he use to blow me away with his talent on the ball, and crossing ability, but he has faded as well recently.
Silva is an amazing spanish winger, he to me is a true wing player
Camoranesi, for me, is the best winger I've seen in the past 10 years, hands down. He may not be as prolific as Messi or Ronaldo, but his passing attributes are on another level when compared to those two. And as far as I'm concerned, a winger who can't deliver, isn't a very good winger at all. Robben is an honourable mention, he's awesome. I also think that Damien Duff (wayyy back in his Chelsea heyday) was very good. Ashley Young seems like he could be in with a shout for best winger in the world, but I'm going to give him more time before I make up my mind
Yes I forgot about Camoranesi he is an amazing wing player, and true to his position. Damien Duff is awesome! That's all that needs to be said haha.
And Ashley Young is good but I think Theo Walcott is better and younger, and will end up being the best winger in the world if he can stay healthy and avoid injury
Glen Jhonson is a true winger as well as Valencia. They run up and down the field on their sides and make many crosses. They also help in the buildup of the play. But, what is a true winger to all of you mean? What do they do?
Haha Glen johnson should convert to that side and let dossena mess up in the right back position. I don't think it will change much attackivley as he is already doing that.
And For Valencia. He is alright, never really thought of him as amazing. Ill say he is an slightly better that average player
Santillanavilla, we are trying to establish what a true winger is on this forum so what do you think they are?
Glen Johnson too me is a defender first and foremost, but he like to get forward and get involved in the attack and put balls in the box, like you said. Along with players like Dani Alves, Roberto Carlos, Patrice Evra and Ashley Cole but to me they are defenders who have the ability to get forward.
True wingers in the modern game in my eyes are players like Lennon, Walcott, David Silva, Nakamura, Riera and Joaquin Sanchez. Players with pace who can take on their defender in wide positions and play dangerous balls into the box. And because they are midfielders they should play defence(even if not well or in some modern cases not at all). But of course this is all up to a matter of opinion.
So again what, in your eyes is a wing player supposed to be santillanavilla?
I think you got it spot on. A true winger like you said has to have speed, have the ability to get pass players, and play dangerous plays across the box. They should also be able to relieve the pressure of the defence on their respective sides
Diego Capel, Stewart Downing, Albert Riera, Joe Cole, Florent Malouda, Clint Dempsey, James Milner, Steven Pienaar and Park Ji Sung are also true wingers...
LTU, are you kidding that Park always scores goal himself? He always passes the ball to other people. Even in the 1 on 1 situation, when Rooney is standing right next to him, he decides to pass the ball instead of shooting and Rooney scored a easy tap in. He only score 2 to 3 last season and produced 5 to 6 assists. So he is one winger too
Quaresma and Ribery more than Ronaldo and Messi, I think they have become more strikers. Giggsy is right on the money though, and yes only Quaresma when he wants to play hahaha. He is lazy like Mancini
