I came second place in last seasons Dreamfooty out of tens of thousands of entrants, and even won some money out of the game. I decided to give some very simple tips for those looking for a little guidance.
Please don't make the topic specific, like suggesting to buy Player "X" from team "Y". Just keep it general.
1. My first tip is to research a little. This might sound obvious, but do a little research and choose a player that will start every game and who plays alongside a superstar. For example, don't pick the 20 million dollar defender, when his 8 million dollar partner in defence will get just as many clean sheets and appearances.
2. I think the game will be won and lost with the low cost players, not necessarily the high cost ones. If you can choose a 5 million dollar midfielder that takes penalties, corners, crosses well and perhaps scores a few, you have done well.
3. Subs aren't necessary. In the league dreamfooty last season, subs were vital because over the full season, players got crippled or suspended and you had to bring in subs. In the world cup, not only are you hurting your budget by bringing in subs, but you run the risk of never using them. That is, unless you have a strategy of swapping in players every day or two to maximise points.
4. Take your time and pick your star players well. Some are obvious, but some can decide your entire tournament.
5. Go Pro+. I know it sounds like an advert, but its not, seriously. You can go pro+ for as little money as you think is fair. A couple of dollars a year is fine, but more is obviously the right thing to do! You'll get a minimum +10 million on your budget to buy players when you do this. If that earns you a chunk of the big prizes, it will seem a bargain.
They are very good advice Ant. I won dreamfooty (worldcup) I used to add a little advice. It must take some risk because if you put 11 players available, you are sure that many members will have these players in their teams. Example -> the first 3 ranking dreamfooty world cup had Ozil (though nobody could say that the revelation would Ozil the world). Ps: watch friends because I go pro soon lol. Strongly the beginning of the game And lively footytube, this game is awesome. Thank you
Don't buy players based on your allegiances. Do buy players that you may hate. If you're just in it for fun, by all means, reunite Ronaldo and Rooney up front (for an extremely unaffective front line) and giggle yourself to sleep. But if you're in it for the money or the self-satisfaction of going far, choose wisely.
Just because a player is 23mil doesn't mean he will score ALL the goals in the World Cup. Think about what position a player plays and how they play it; they could be 18 million and an amazing player, but they could just be a cog in the machine that doesn't produce points, but victories. Be selective again and choose wisely.
Spread that cash around. If you only have 100 mil, don't invest it in 4 players; remember, the teams that will go farthest are the best ones to equip your squad with, and you want to have as many players on your team as possible that will go far. Don't play players from national sides that may not make it past the group stages in real life; try to get players from teams that can make it out, and you will make more points for it. Lots more. 300 more (sorry to be too specific there).
Another tip, you have to make sure that the players you choose are different than those of most of your opponents (don't know if I said right....) its one of the ways to break your way through to the top. Make the difference ! ^ ^
Don't but injury prone players. If they made it through the whole club season without getting hurt that's a good sign. I feel sorry for anybody who bought Ludley King. Fabregas, Iniesta, Xavi, Drogba, Ashley Cole and Rooney among others all went into the world cup with question marks about their health. This pertains to Ants #1 point about researching your picks
Xavi isn't injury prone at all actually, nor did he go into the tournament with doubts about his health. But you're right for the rest, although sometimes taking a risk can bear fruit, as the player will likely be valued lower than others
The main reason I won the DF competition of the '09-'10 season is because I danced the Macarena every night. But, researching which players are likely to score/assist/always be part of the first team etc. Is also a pretty vital thing. Another very, very useful tip is that you don't need a world class defender or GK to get great points because defenders and GKs get most of their pts with the clean sheet bonus (+8 pts). As long as the whole team is good, they're unlikely to get goals in. Last season some of the best defenders and goalkeepers weren't that renowned, but still gathered a huge amount of pts, because the team around them was very good. If I would be Chelsea's left back for example, even I may have even ended up in the top defenders, because Terry & co will make sure the opposition doesn't score. For midfielders: always pick attacking midfielders, because a defensive MF will often get a yellow or even red card and he will most definitely not score a lot. Strikers: the only thing you have to bear in mind here is whether he'll score a lot. Messi won last year's best striker on DF by a landslide, because he scored a humongous amount of goals, hat-tricks and assisted quite a lot too. But another good option, an even better price-quality ratio, was Pedro, who scored and assisted a lot too and was probably only half the price Messi was.
All in all, it's pretty obvious what you have to do, just keep the rating system in mind at all times and make rational decisions. And please do not dance the Macarena every day, because this gives you an unfair advantage
Haha, who needs the Macarena when you can Cha Cha Cha? Good tips everyone, it's just a shame I threw a tantrum because I couldn't take mixing and matching any longer, cursed it all to hell and went with some suspect choices. On day one I already knew the 3 players that I wanted to sell, but should not have picked in the first place. If this season teaches me anything, it is to be patient and go with my gut, and not follow a flurry of irritation. My target is to get my hands on some of the prize money because I am broke and lazy of late, and to finally take a beautiful girl I know on a date. She never believed my love-in with football would provide financial support or reap her any rewards, but if I come in the top 25 I will never let her forget what was footing the bill, and whose feet got us there
Another tip would be to remmeber that attackers get just as many points for assisting a goal, as if they had scored it themselves. This means those attackers that don't get on the scoresheet but are always whipping in crosses might end up with a big score
I can wait for the new season to start. I am also very excited about dream footy for the new season. Last season I did reasonable well. I was ranked 94th with 4362 points. I could have done better if it was not for robinho. I had him as my star forward and he went and got injured an I was unable to replace him until the end of january. I also had jaquain has my midfield miestro and that did not turn out well so I had to replace him with fabregas and then fabregas got injured. But I am go for the number one spot next season. Look out footyfubers
The best tip I can give is do the exact opposite of what I did this tournament. I was doing fine, and then decided to change from 4-3-3 to 5-3-2 and drop Muller from Germany (who I had mentioned previously was one of my best players)
I think I spotted the transfer window was open and made my changes very late at night, not really paying a huge amount of attention.
Also Italy, France, England and Brazil going out so early screwed my team. Finally, I have the Dutch keeper so he got a clean sheet or two at the start but since then he has conceded at least a goal a game.
Congrats to all the winners, when it gets announced. Unless Villa bangs in seventy in the semi final I'm out of the running
