Mexico and Chile both advanced thanks to a scoreless draw. Only once was either goalkeeper severely tested as both teams seemed more than willing to take their point and move on to the quarterfinals.

Brazil qualified for the second round of the Copa America after a narrow 1-0 victory over Ecuador, in what was one of the poorest matches of the competition. Robinho's penalty goal early in the second half was enough to give the Brazilians the three points.
