Arshavin put up the best individual performance in this tournament during that match. He was BRILLIANT. I could not believe how good he was. Ive seen him a few times for Zenit and in some of Russia’s qualifiers, no doubt he was a very good player. But what he did tonight was simply extraordinary. It was magnificent! He was all over the place. Not sure what happened to Holland, guess they never got a spark to spur them on. Its unfortunate, they were a very good side and I enjoyed watching them. Russia have been very good the last couple of matches now. I hope they play just as well in the semifinals, great team to watch too.

an unbelievable performance by the Russians. They outclassed the dutch in all aspects of the game. the dutch were truly scared and chocked as always. What does Guss Hiddink give his players? the man is simply amazing.

i always believe in russia and its the only team having 99% players from national teams, YOUNGEST team and team that ran the most (in km, the distance). i was surprised and im happy
im happy that i ordered russian jersey after match with spain, because even tho they lost 4-1 and were bad in defence, they played football and hit post and had chances.. im russian, im happy and i will die from happinese if this side will be champions. only team i fear is italy. their disgusting game is unpleasant to watch and they kill pace of game.. this is only what gonna edfeat russians..

this result wuldnt have happened if the ref hadnt taken back his red card given to Kolodin. I thought once a decision was made tht was it?
and the ball from sjneider never went out, shows how hopeless the officials are…
Andrei | June 22nd, 2008 @ 12:07 am
Ya the ball never went out but Kolodin didn’t foul Sneijder, it doesn’t show it but when you see it slo-mo he doesn’t foul him so in the end it’s fair.

I haven’t watched the highlights yet but did the ref really give a red then take it back. I thought that was literally impossible. I thought once the red has left the pocket it’s game over no 2nd chance.
Does this completely change the rules of football? Now when players get a red they won’t leave instead they’ll lobby to have the card recinded. Ridiculous. :o

Gush Hidnik is a Genius a True genius….i am just amazed by the tactics of the team, tallent of ARSHAVIN, Pauleschenko, their tackles and the shooting of KOLODIN………….Amazing!!!!!!!!the deserved this RUSSIAN DESERVES EURO 08 WITH THIS QUALITY OF PLAY…………..10000000 WOW FOR ARSHAVIN……HE IS UNSTOPPABLE, EQUVALENT TO RONALDO WITHOUT THOSE FANCY FOOTSTEPS…..HOPE TO SEE HIM IN EPL
GIo | June 22nd, 2008 @ 12:34 am
no, he didnt change his decision because players lobby, he changed it, because assistant ref. confirmed that ball was out. thats it.
it happened before and ref made mistake taking card out not looking at assistent. but THRE WAS NO FAUL FOR YELLOW CARD… so everything is fair…
russia deserved win..
no doubt

Well done Arshavin! Indeed there’ll be several clubs drooling for his signature! I was hoping Netherlands would go through as I’ve always wanted to see a Netherlands v Spain match.. but to be honest I wasn’t surprised. Holland are very much like Spain and Argentina, they usually conquer during the group stages but fall out flat during the final stages. Holland’s back four aren’t strong enough — they lack someone with the figure of Stam/De Boer..
Dutta | June 22nd, 2008 @ 1:45 am
Those of you that are bad mouthing Van Der Saar need to understand that without this man, the match would have been over long ago,and the Russians would probably have taken a 3 or 4 goal lead in regulation time [-x

That’s true, but actually a referee isn’t allowed to withdrawl a given card. So kolodin should have been sent of (even though it wasn’t a foul, but the ball wasn’t out either) Normally games have to be played again when mistakes like this happen.. it has happened before! But i’m dutch and the Russians were simply better yesterday, so i respect them and hope they win the tournament. Or maybe Spain. The rest of the teams don’t really deserve it!

A given card can’t be withdrawled, matches have been replayed because of incidents just like this. But i doubt that they will replay this one.. A given second yellow is a given red card so this was a big mistake by the ref. If kolodin was sent of they wouldn’t have won the 30 after that because of a lack of organisation (Kolodin is important central defender) But the decision would have been to harsh because it wasn’t a foul to be honest.
David Langham | June 22nd, 2008 @ 7:18 am

Having seen the highlights I now understand the game should have stopped. I also agree that Russia & Arshavin completely outplayed the Netherlands I never suggested otherwise. HOWEVER the ref did give the 2nd Yellow which IS a Red and therefore even though he was wrong he shouldn’t be allowed to take back a card.
When a ref is wrong he can admit he’s wrong but he has no power to recind a card red or yellow. It’s a case of tough luck old chap. How many footballers have been wronged by a ref yet still had to swallo their anger and march off because the card had been given and thems the breaks?
So pelase don’t accuse me of talking “crap” when I’m merely stating the facts as they are. Thank you.

That was amazing stuff by Kolodin (yes i know the red card) he whacked the ball 30-40 yards out and it had power and just a tiny inaccuracy..
If it’s not for Van Der Sar, probably the dutch will be like 3-0 4-0 down ? .. simply superb display from the Russians =d>

This was a brilliant performance by Russians! Breathtaking game! The best game I’ve ever seen!!! They showed fantastic football! Netherlands is a great team, but were simply outplayed on all fronts – physical, tactical and technical.
If not for Van Der Sar – Russian would scored another 3-4 goals.
Anything can happen in sports but you can’t deny the fact that it was the most outstanding game in this tournament and, in my opinion, probably the most exciting and intense game played – ever! Whoever you are – Dutch, Geman, Spanish – you can’t deny that this was the best game to watch for any football fan!!! Russians showed football at its beauty and how football should be played!!!

Anything could happen in sports – Turks could win but you have to accept the fact that their games are absolutely not interesting to watch. They don’t show good football and in my opinion don’t deserve to win.
About the “red card” – there was no foul regardless of whether tha ball was out or not. If Kolodin would have been sent off – that would have been referiing at its worst. And even if Russia would loose as a result – this would still be the best game to watch this tournament and it would be unfair if russians lost.
I think we[turks] will be seeing you[Russians] in the finals
But I think it’s going to be 2-2 [5-4 penalties]
and WE WIN /:)
If we make it to the the finals we will win for sure, cause we will have our full team, and all our key players back, servet, arda, tumer, ALL THOSE world class players. If we beat Germany with our reserve team, we will rape Russia with our FULL team.
But best of luck to Russia, from Turkey.
I think you were exceptionally lucky to get that far. First with the game against Chechs and then Croatians – both of the teams gave up on you thinking that they have you and you capitalized on their mistakes. Germans will put you back to where you belong. But good luck to you!

Well, Turkey got over Croatia because they couldn’t handle their emotions.
Germans don’t even have emotions.
You get the point.

Germany vs Spain/Russia is a well-deserved final I think. Apart from relegated Portugal and Netherlands – those are the most prepped and watchable teams.

Stop whining about the red card already! Dutch were outplayed so much, they should be lucky to boast only 3 goals against. You know what? Sh’t happens.

I agree – stop whining people !!! There was no red card no matter how you put it! He didn’t even touch the guy – you could see that clearly on the replay – not in this video though…

Your comment makes me think that you were completely out of this and have not watched the games – otherwise you’d say that Russians showed the most exciting and breathtaking football of this tournament (to say the least). Calling them weak after Zenit winning UEFA cup, putting England out of Euro 2008 and their last few games might also imply that you’re amateur and don’t understand the game.
marcel | June 23rd, 2008 @ 3:24 pm
You saw their first match with spain? And anawer question you saw the Holland match with Italy and France,no I think you dont understand the game

Ok, Einstein. Let me break it down to you if you don’t get it from the first time: I didn’t say that Holland was a bad team, in fact I said that they’re a brilliant team and was my favorite team after their first few games. So your second remark is irrelevant. Logically, your first remark would indicate that Dutch is a weak team since they lost 3:1 to Russia and have not had a single strong opportunity to score except the set pieces. Obviously that’s not the case.

We really deserved this victory! I simply didnt expect from our team having played so welll! It was very TREMENDOUS game! Arshavin and Zhirkov are the best players.I’m looking forward to watching the match Russia-Spain and seeing disappointed faces of spaniards after the final whistle! GO AHEAD, RUSSIA!

Oh man, sounds like Arshavin is leaving Zenit at the end of this Euro…Any idea where he would be going? EPL or La Liga?
eR | June 25th, 2008 @ 8:41 am
I want Arshavin to stay at Zenith and bring Zenith to Champions League glory :D UEFA already in hand I am sure they capabe to go pass group stage of Champions League. and yeah Russian under Hiddink has shown us great football :D
nohomo | June 25th, 2008 @ 10:59 am
Man city, Arsenal (potential list), Newcastle, Tottenham, Inter, Milan (potential list), Barcelona, Real (potential list) all expressed that they want Arshavin’s services.
He himself said he thinks he might find himself more useful at Arsenal, but favours La Liga above all.
nohomo | June 25th, 2008 @ 11:54 am
Also, Deco is leaving and I’ve read that Barca’s fans want Arshavin to replace him.
So I’d put my money on his transfer to Barcelona (that is if he decides to leave Zenit).
an unbelievable performance by the Russians. They outclassed the dutch in all aspects of the game. the dutch were truly scared and chocked as always. What does Guss Hiddink give his players? the man is simply amazing.
what do you mean “as always” we are a amazing team and the fact that russia beat us was because of hiddink if hiddink wasn’t there russia woud have been a push over.
