Croatia v Turkey
June 21st, 2008 . posted by admin
Turkey left it late again to record victory, with a dramatic penalty-shoot out success after an equaliser in injury time of extra-time at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium left Croatia defeated and took Fatih Terim’s side into the Euro 2008 semi-final.
Croatia 1-1 Turkey (1-3 pens)

What an unbelievable game. After Croatia scored they thought they had won it and were celebrating. Their celebrations were short lived when Semih equalised and even shorter lived after the penalty shootout.
GO TURKIYE GO.
Here we come Germany!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Turkey could hold them till 90 minutes, Germans stamina will sink. Turkey can score in the extra time. So it’s not a free ticket, believe me.
I’m seeing a Turkey vs Italy final with Italy taking it.. I hate the Italians but I think they’ll make it again :-(

Last EURO, it was Greece. Everybody thought after the matches in group ended: gee, its good to have them out! Good footbal is coming!

We have to admit croats played better in 90 mins but in extra times turkey was much better. and again what a comeback i dont know which 1 is my favorite but i gotta say the czechs comeback when 2-0 down even dow this was a last second strike i stick with the czecks comeback.

Last I checked this was called the European Cup, not the European Union cup. Since part of Turkey is on the European continent that means they can compete. From the game I watched neither team was spectacular, and no one deserved the win over the other, but some one has gotta win. Well fought victory by the Turks who have shown a tremendous amount of heart and resolve. I’m tired of all these jealous haters knockin Turkey. Get the fuck over it!

I have to say that Croatia played better and statistics confirm that. The ball is round like we know, and this was not the first time that a better playng team lost. It hurts me to hear some people say that our wins, or how Greece won the last Euro, damage football. The fact that lesser known teams are achieving greater success is a victory for world football. We all know the game is 90 minutes, not 87 as shown against the Czech Republic. We have also shown that with extra time the game goes on until 120 minutes not 119. Luck is not a recurring event. It happens once in a while and runs out the next game. The fact that we have done this 3 games in a row is not luck. It would be luck if it happened once, maybe twice, but not three times. Same goes for the Greeks and their excellent performance 4 years ago. There are 2 key factors of our success. The first is our unlimited determination to win regardless of the current score. The second is simply disorganized chaos! We are entirely unpredictable so it is impossible to establish a proper pre game strategy against us. With so many injuries and suspensions we are even more unpredictable for the game against Germany. The German strategy is to analyze a team and exploit weaknesses like they did with free kicks against Portugal. The Turkish team can not be analyzed like this and that is why we will win again. The scoring time doesn’t matter. It is not a matter of luck for any team to make it this far. Luck does not last and our performance has lasted since the beginning. You say luck? I say sore loser without enough determination to win.
H3LLmonkey | June 22nd, 2008 @ 1:53 am
I have nothing against the croats, it’s just that, I don’t like a bad sport, someone who can’t move on, and congratulate us. We won, and that’s what matters. You guys played well, but the end result, is 3-1, so I’m sorry. But don’t whine, and bitch about it, because, you can’t change it anyways, you’re wasting your breath.

they are counted as ‘European’ in that they have a Mediterranean coastline, but usually because their neighbours hate them!
and because the only other league they could play in would be the Asian league which contains Syria, Iran, Iraq etc and there would be a huge fight every time that they had a game so FIFA decided to put them into Europe as it would save a lot of hassle and possible blood shed

I couldn’t beleive my eyes when Semih scored at last minute of extra time :o I know Turkey has many injured and suspensions against Germany, but i think that they will win the match. ;) But it will be normal this time (not comeback) :)>- I think score will be Turkey 2 – 1 Germany :d/

We should probably congratulate Turks for winning again, although only fools or those uncritical Tukish fans would say that Turks were the better team. As someone said here, out of 4 games, they won 3 by deciding in last minutes after playing badly.
Nonetheless, their morale, desire to win and massive load of luck theyve had so far is astonishing…
How different were the two matches: TUR-CRO and HOL-RUS. As no interesting football could have been expected from Greeks, so I didnt watch their games, the TUR-CRO game was the weakest and most boring one I have seen at this EURO so far. On the other hand, HOL-RUS has been the best game so far: fast, up and down, dramatic, thrilling… Simply a game that is pleasure to watch
If Turks had played only a fourth of the great football which we could see by HOL and RUS, I would say they deserve to be where they are now but they have not.
I am quite curious about Turish total statistics, especially about yellow cards.
Quite funny, now I am starting to believe that Turks will beat Germans, with such a massive amount of luck. By all means, thats gonna be the first time I will wish Germans to win… :)
Hrvatska fans – do not be sad, your team played well, your defense was just excellent and once the young guys in your team will get more experienced, you will be able to beat anybody. Anyway, I think that Bilic made a mistake by sending two young guys for the penalty kicks. When Modric walked to the spot, you could see in his pale face that he would miss the net.
Get the **** over it!
From my predicament, once again anti-Turkish parrots are launched “lucky lucky lucky….”.
According to some turkey have been lucky for 3 games in a row now including extra time, which means lucky for 300 minutes of active football, 33 professional opponent players whom had the opportunity to avoid defeat, 3 opponent managers to make tactical impact, result? Turkey in the last four. Sorry the word luck doesn’t convince me…
I truly start to believe that there are other factors for this anti- Turkish behaviour; people seem to find it difficult to accept success from developing nations e.g. turkey, Romania, Greece….
Vondosmanoff states “the TUR-CRO game was the weakest and most boring one I have seen at this EURO so far “ you must have missed Germany against Austria?
Game of the tournament: Turkey vs Czech, the most astonishing game so far… I’ve heard at least 15 different nationality commentators screaming at nihats top corner against cech. No similar commentary since..
14 fit/unfit players left in the turkey squad, only Hamit and Aurelio are first team players! 3rd choice keeper Tolga Zengin may have to come on as center back or stiker against Germany. Now it’s the time to burst them unique nationalistic feelings to beat the Germans…
Good luck Turkish warriors…

Mehmet, I thought you were a man of reason but no, you are blind and as pathetic as your fellow citizens kissing Turkish flag… You only wrap it all in eloquency.
Tell me one thing: if the word luck does not convince you, which does? No doubts that Turks won the games but were they a team that played better football and that fully deserved to win?
About the game: I saw GER-AUT and the Austrians were just fantastic. Quite do not understand why do you take this game as an example of a boring game. Had Turks played at least as good as the Austrians in this game, I would say: “Yes, they fully deserve it.”
Turkey: in four games + one extra time, there were cca 6 + 15 + 3 = 24 minutes of lucky extremity that put Turks into the semifinals, but this is something that a fanatical Turk cant possibly see.
Mehmet, you say it was not luck that saved your team. What was it then, if not luck? Was it Allah the Akbar? Musta been, certainly nothing else…

every1 moans about luck, againts the swiss turkey was the better team even though they were the away team and deservingly won it, againts the czechs we were a bit lucky but u cant say luckkkkky as they took the fortune on their own hands. to admit againts croatia we were lucky but at the end of the day they play and deservingly score no team will ever do what turkey ahs been doing so far speacially the game againts the czechs.
Me | June 23rd, 2008 @ 11:18 pm
Croatia was the better team? I think not. They had a million opportunities and did they capitalize? Obviously not. Same with the Czechs. The fact of the matter is Turkey put away the chances that they had, and in the end that separated the teams. So don’t be saying luck this luck that. Its just like a sore sport to make any excuse imaginable. You guys can’t finish and it cost you.
Vondosmanoff | June 24th, 2008 @ 2:58 am
Btw. did you notice what was the defender doing when Klasnic was scoring the Croatian first goal? Well, if you cant defend a goal to be scored by your own skills, you must use any other way to do so. Even hands count.

Tunja | June 25th, 2008 @ 5:05 am
@ Vondosmanoff,
In Turkish we have a saying; it goes like this “Hatice’ye degil, Netice’ye bak”. Let me try to translate this. Hatice is a female name and Netice means “result”. The proverb simply says “Don’t check Hatice (girl) out, check the result out”.
You’re talking about funny stuff. Check out the result! The more you talk the more look alike a cry baby.
About the statistics about yellow cards: Turks have been given so many easy/cheap yellow cards in past 2 games. According to the statistics in Croatia game, Turks got 4 yellow cards and their opponents ZERO. No need to watch the whole game. Just watch the second (short one) video here. Second 22, the Turkish defender got a kick in his face. Result? Nothing! Not even a warning. Don’t try to tell me that those cards were fair coz they were NOT!
Those who are claiming that “Turkey is not part of Europa” :) well you’re really funny. First of all, Turkey has SOIL in Europa. Other than that in order to be able to play in the Euro Cup, the country does not have to have soil on the continent. For instance, Kazakhstan/Armenia/Azerbaijan/Georgia/Israel those countries are(were) playing the Euro Cup and they do NOT have soil on the continent. When they’re playing it’s fine with no SOIL but when Turkey is playing “oooo Turkey is not part of Europe” even if Turkey have SOIL… Stop writing nonsense.
If Israel were playing at the semi finals, are those Einsteins were gonna tell the same story. I don’t think so. So get a life and deal with the fact.
PS: I salute you all. Dear Brates, good luck at the next tournament.
Down Doesn't Mean Out | June 25th, 2008 @ 5:06 am
Turkey is in the semi final. In their four games so far, they’ve had the lead for about two minutes in total.
It doesn’t matter how long you’re behind so long as you finish ahead.
We are the champpion…
Vondosmanoff | June 25th, 2008 @ 1:10 pm
Tunja,
I very much see your point. Congratulations to Turkey for getting to the semis, thats without any doubts. However, what I was trying to point out is that in the process of getting there, Turkey was extremely lucky and in my opinion, the amount of luck exceeded the amount of football skills.
Yes, the result. That is the magic word. There is no doubt about the results, if you look at them only. I am not. The result is excellent for Turkey, just as is their morale and enthusiasm – but is the game, defense, attacking part of the game as excellent as the result? Can it be compared to that of e. g. Russia in the match agains NED? Or to NED in matches against FRA, ITA?
Actually, Tunja, does your Turkish saying (I probably do not fully understand it, the girls name makes me puzzled) tell us that it does not really matter how you get the result?
I do not really care who the winner of this EURO is: I did not believe in our team too much – they did not deserve to go through anyway as they won only a single game, and that was a lucky victory, fully undeserved (just as the three victories of Turkey) and actually, the sadness caused by a lost game is long gone. Most people (critics, coaches, players, commentators, ordinary fans) here said it was an undeserved victory, we were lucky, SUI and Frei especially very unlucky…
It is probably a difference in mentalities: you Turks celebrate the victory and it seems so that this is all that matters. I ve heard only one single TUrkish voice here saying “we were lucky.” And to add up, Terim claimed that the match with GER would be a clash of giants. An outrage or is he blowing his own horn? THis is what I cannot understand: you have been extremely lucky, seem not to be able to realize it, and you see yourselves on the top of the world…
Anyway, so it is :)
Btw. if we do not count the raids and temporary reign of Turkish sultans in Europe, Turkey has never been a part of Europe neither historically, nor geographically. Not trying to be racist – I do not really care if the Turks play EURO, but I think that this one fact needs to be cleared…
Vondosmanoff | June 25th, 2008 @ 1:15 pm
Geography (division Europe – Asia) is a “modern” convention. There are not many Christians in Turkey, are there? This is much more important reason for Turkey not fully belonging to Europe – the religion (again, not trying to be racist – until not long time ago in history (cca 18th century, Turks were “barbarians” und uncivilized folks for EUropeans).
Now it is all different, of course…

@Vondosmanoff
Luck comes at an instant. you can be playing luckily for 3 games
Also, football is a combination of two things. Offense and Defense. Both can make mistakes. Offensive mistakes mean you dont score, defensive mistakes me you get scored upon so long as their offense doesnt also make a mistake.
AND LISTEN TO THIS VONDO!
defense makes mistakes, its part of football, and if turkey is there to capitalize on those mistakes, that is not luck, that is football. and the only goal you can claim to be luck is the second goal against czechs, where the keeper dropped it right to his feet.
also its all about the timing for you, just cuz we were only ahead for a few minutes in each game, doesnt mean we didnt score more goals,
1 more thing, it wasnt just the last 15 minutes against czech, it was the entire second half that turkey dominated
TURKIYEE | June 25th, 2008 @ 1:23 pm

People, what we are talking about, yes we win te match, but i must say that the croatia were better fo 2 class, but we are turkey,we are unity we play with heart, for our country and that s all, croatia and netherland and spain were 3 best team in euro 08,but as you all saw, today doesn t win the best team, you must have a heart, you must love the game,so I m sry croatia but we are in semi final, but i m jealous on croatia because they have the best fan in europe,i was on ernste-happel stadium vs croatia, and that i than i was not belived, and i watch all games, they are so many and they are unity, strong clearly singing, all and coreography, fantastic, they get inside (aut-cro) and run on field, on match with germany, they were fantastic they had over 15+more flare, what nobody cant took inside stadium, and they fights with austria fans, with german in fan zone, and with us,i almost get kick, luckily i didn t,
that s all from me
Go turkey go !
we will be 1 st!
Tunja | June 25th, 2008 @ 10:33 pm
@ Vondosmanoff,
The proverb is exactly about the stuff what you’re trying to do. I’m telling that we made till the semi finals. You’re saying “you were lucky” ?? I’ve never said that we weren’t lucky. But being lucky doesn’t change the result. If you want to pin point the fact that we were lucky rather than the result that we made to the semi finals than I’ll say that you’re trying to underestimate the success by calling it pure luck. Yes we were lucky. No doubt but there were sth more than pure luck.
I’ve mentioned about the countries without SOIL in the continent. You might have missed that part from my post. That’s fine. Here I’m not trying to prove anything. Because I don’t really care if you consider Turkey as part of Europe or not. I really don’t care. I’ve talked about SOIL, your come back is RELIGION? What are you talking about?
You’re claiming that Turk have been called “barbarians” for a while but not anymore… You know what I am thinking? I think you are trying to take the conversation to a nonsense route because you have no solid response to the main argument.
What happened to my questions about Kazakhstan/ Armenia/ Azerbaijan/ Georgia/ Israel? Ooooo my bad! You’ve already answered, right? You said “there is not much Christians in Turkey” :-”
Over all Turkey maybe didn’t play the best football but they don’t HAVE to play the best football. Would you like to talk about the previous Euro Cup and Greeks victory? I don’t think so. But of course you can always claim that it’s cool because they’re Christians.
If you wanna talk about football that’s fine. But if you are gonna try to insult me or Turkey, don’t bother coz I won’t get angry and I won’t respond you.
We have another saying goes like this “Bad words are belong to their owners” …
Cheers
Vondosmanoff | June 26th, 2008 @ 2:25 am
Tunja,
this is exactly I feared. No offense meant, plenty taken…
I talked about football and peacefully and with reason – I hope – have I explained my point of view. There is no need to go over it again. We do not understand each other, probably cannot understand each other as for you, a Turk, the end (the result) is more important than the way your team got there. Quite understandably and logically enough, though.
The main point of my post here was that Turkey did not play well (in my opinion) and as they did not play well, they were extremely lucky to get so far. We have an idiom for that: “utéci hrobníkovi z lopaty” (something like to run away from gravedigger’s shovel, in English “return from death’s door”). Turkey managed to run away 3 times, and it is only a matter of point of view if you see it as a “cunning tactical plan”, “perfect piece of coaching”,”bad luck”, “lack of football skills” or what not… We do not share our points of view, OK, I see no problem with that. On the other hand, I see no reason why I should not write my opinion…
Speaking about Christianity and football, or rather mixing the two the way you do (or you see ME do, probably) is an utter nonsense. Here you completely missed my point, I am afraid:
- in a very short remark, I tried to say that from certain, very important point of view, Turkey does not belong to Europe. THis is a scientific fact, not an insult and it makes me rather sad that you think I tried to insult you or your country. It has nothing to do with bigotry, orthodoxy or racism. For centuries, Europe was shaped by certain set of beliefs and norms, rules etc. that were completely different to those in Turkey, India etc and which set the two apart. This is what I tried to say, and again – exaggerating this fact – no offense meant to anybody. Unfortunately, it was the religion – a term or issue that is rather tricky to get into now – that until the 18th century, Near East was considered as “uncivilized, barbaric…” So from historical point of view, Turkey is not a part of Europe. Think about me what you want, but please, try to understand my argumentation. As I have written, nowadays the politics made geographical division of world look completely different.
This is all wanted to say. I quite do not understand why do you feel offended and insulted. I have no problem to say sorry though I do not know what am I apologizing for and no offense was intended.
Btw. 4 years ago, Greeks played as terribly as you, maybe even worse, this is without any doubts. One could hardly watch it – that boring it was – and it has got absolutely nothing to do with religion. Anyway, my only belief (which is constantly doubted by something in nature) is reason – I am not baptized, dont go to church and do not believe in Jesus Christ, just as most Czechs dont.
Cheers to you too
The more funny it is
