Champions League Final – Manchester Utd v Chelsea

(Champions League Final 2008) Man Utd win on penalties
The biggest game of the season came down to a footballing version of Russian roulette in Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium last night. And Manchester United were the ones whose nerve held in a match of more than two hours. It also ensured that United repeated their 1999 feat of winning the double: the English Premier League and the European Champions League.

i feel sorry for lampard and terry. both played wonderful. when it goes to PKs its luck from there. i was happy to see ronaldo missed his chance at failing. losing would have been his fault.

ok i’m ecstatic that Man Utd won! we are the best!
-that was a fantastic game from both teams
-props to chelsea for making me so nervous, they overplayed in the second half, no argument.
-ronaldo played a good game scoring the goal and creating opportunities, however he’s got a little more to go in terms of maturity (missing the pk)
- i kinda feel bad for chelsea but that’s football for you lads, maybe next time, keep ur heads up
- Drogba disappointed me in the end, that wasn’t necessary at all brother. guess it’ll be part of his legacy
- special props to scholes, vidic, brown, and evra: great games fellas
haha ronaldo miss the penalty.

you really are dumb, it wouldnt have even gone to penalties without ronaldos goal to begin with he played well for being defended heavily by essien.. united could have easily scored 3 or 4 more if not for cech saving their ***** as usual. nice JT choke dont think iv seen a grown man cry more

didnt watch the game because engish football is **** looking at the goals i didnt miss much. a goal from a throw in and a goal after 19 deflections barcelona ******* dominated united in both legs it was a joke united didnt deserve to be there i heared ronaldo miss his penalty what a choker if terry didnt slip over chelsea would have won
jon | May 21st, 2008 @ 10:46 pm
“he played well for being defened heavily by essien” what kind of excuse is that if hes so good he should have been able to handle one person real good players get double teamed every time they touch the ball
rvg | May 21st, 2008 @ 10:52 pm
It was an ok game, both teams played hard, but conditions kept the game from being the spectacle it could have been. Ronaldo is overrated. Cech made saves for Chelsea, but Chelsea also hit the woodwork several times. It was an evenly played match. I feel bad for Lampard, he deserved the title more than anyone else on the pitch. Congrats to Man U. Good luck to both teams next year!
“he played well for being defened heavily by essien” what kind of excuse is that if hes so good he should have been able to handle one person real good players get double teamed every time they touch the ball
He dribbled past Essien several times and played very well in the first half. He didn’t do as much in the second half because United barely had any possession outside of their own half. He had a solid game.
Clyde | May 21st, 2008 @ 11:01 pm
Essien did very well. So did makalele and balack and lampard … drogba did okay (he was alone up there) – terry did well (except for that HUGE penalty miss!!)
on the united side, ronaldo was kept quiet in the second half and latter part of the game. rooney was non existent (he had a couple good passes) evra did well as usual, so did Vidic… good balanced game, both teams had the ier chances. Man u could have buried it in the first half (with at least 3 goals) but that’s not how she wrote it! although they ended up winning it…. :)
thanks for uploading the full penalty session! wanted to see that again…

results
fair play
goals
big game performance
entertainment
passing
unselfishness
great delivery

MAN UNITED ARE THE KINGS OF EUROPE AGAIN!!!!! I have to admit though that it was a very close game that could have gone either way; Man United dominated the first half, Chelsea the second half. Justice is done for the Man United Team of 2008 and the Busby Babes of 1958. IT WAS MEANT TO BE!!!!!

i think john terry is slipped when he already shot the ball
Eric | May 21st, 2008 @ 11:50 pm
Good game, here’s my critique:
Retarded:
Drogba – slapping @ the end, he would have been in the shoot out.
Ronaldo – over emphasizing the stutter run-up.
Anelka – doing the short run up & Essien probably should have taken it.
Man of the Match – Van der Sar – that’s twice recently he’s stopped Rio’s clumsy defensive headers from being huge own goals.
I bet deep down inside Jose Mourinho is laughing his *** off
ella | May 21st, 2008 @ 11:59 pm
John Terry was actually honored to score the winning goal but sadly, he slipped just like van der Sar slipped on the Chelsea’s equaliser..
God in heaven still forbid Chelsea messing up the Champions league tradition..

u idiots are missing the whole champions league spirit. Chelsea gave a thrilling game, and all credits to them. To go all the way to the final and miss out on the trophy is not easy, and I think they deserve respect for that. Terry is a great footballer, pity he missed. And all u suckers who bi*ch about his crying are juz kids. I hate Chelsea but football spirit > club egos
ryan | May 22nd, 2008 @ 12:16 am
ronaldo’s first and only ever goal came at the best time. but he is not the greatest player, he merely just had a great season. one great season cant define a player as the greatest player in the world. united got lucky, chelsea hits the bar 3 times (terry) and got drogba sent off. tevez is a fcuking ****** for what he did to provoke chelsea. if i was the referee, which i am not by standards, i would have either given 2 players red cards, 2 players yellow cards, or given nobody any cards; it it just unfair to give one team an advantage by sending another player off. i forgot who it was (either vidic or ferdinand), but they should have gotten a straight red for going studs up to joe cole’s face in extra time. and the supposedly “best player in the world” missed a pk, which just made my day.

buddy | May 22nd, 2008 @ 12:40 am
makelele should have been off sooner.
joe cole should have got a card for much disent.
chelsea was all over the ref all game for disent.
ronaldo played fantastic, great goal, great setup for tevez. good passing most of the time. helped relieve pressure on D second half.
drogbas theatrics were good.
joe cole should had a PK but he stayed up.
cech is fantastic.
****** conditions it looked like.
carrick & giggs shoulda scored sooner.
game was up & down.
ryan | May 22nd, 2008 @ 12:42 am
i didnt want either united nor chelsea to win. i wish it just ended in a tie (which it did), but penalty kicks have to decide a “winner.”
all i asked for was a great match, and i got what i wanted.

to start: ‘first and only ever goal.’ its his 42nd this season alone, right? id hardly say his ‘first’
and it wasnt 1 season. it is 2 consecutive and improving the whole time. hes been best in the world this season, and imo, he was last season too. but thats another matter. he IS best in the world, not best ever.
as for being lucky: united should just the same have been 3-0 up at the half time. lampard’s goal was ridiculously lucky. and that means terry’s doesnt even come into play, because united already won 3-2.
tevez didnt slap anyone. Drogba deserved a red. tevez did deserve a yellow, but no more.

You guys are saying like Ronaldo had ‘miss’ a penalty’. It was not miss, it was safe, get your facts right. He did hit the target right? So it was a 50/50 chance entering the net. How can you say Ronaldo is overated, can you give me 1 players name that can equal he’s achievement this year? I bet you can’t. Cristiano Ronaldo – I Am Legend

Nice sportsmanship dude. I wasn’t just talking about today. I know he plays well, but he has a pretty big ego, at least in my opinion, and he falls all around the pitch trying to win favors from the ref. I don’t respect people like that. He usually ends up choking in big games and, although he played well for much of the game today, his penalty was ridiculous. That was one of the biggest stops I’ve ever seen and he still couldn’t beat Cech. That is my opinion and others are welcome to differ in that opinion, but cusing at me or calling me retarded is inappropriate. Other than that, once again good game to both teams and congrats to Man U.

The superiority of English football was shown again.
After such proof as Liverpool having it easy with Italy’s top team.
The greatest league in the world.
Capello will turn the NT into the greatest in the world. NINE England internationals were on display in the biggest club match of the year yesterday.
Thats not including world class stars such as Steven Gerrard and Gareth Barry.
Viva English Football, the ruling class.

What a bunch of sour grapes some ’supporters’ are. 8-|
Credit to Chelsea for their hard work, but at the end of the day, Manchester United were the better football team this season. It takes great determination and skill to achive the Double, and it is also those same things that create lucky chances.
As for Ronaldo being overrated… :)) No, he’s not perfect, but he’s pretty amazing and the frightening thing is that he keeps improving his game. And at Man Utd, he’s very “lucky” to have excellent teammates who can support him, and help him become an even better player than he is today.

Ok, perhaps I should further clarify my statement. I never meant to imply that Ronaldo is not a great player, I just don’t think he is the best in the world as so many people claim. He had a great season it is true, but I think he has some maturing to do before he can be called the best in the world. I think the reason he so often chokes in big games is because he does not have control over his nerves in the same way that more veteran players do, and I think this point was proven when he botched his penalty kick. Given a few more years and a bit more growing up, he could become the best in the world, but I am hesitant to claim that he already is.

ben | May 22nd, 2008 @ 4:55 am
well, both teams were evenly matched, except that lady luck was standing on the side of MU.
IMO, yellow cards & red cards should be given to:
(RED) – Ferdinand, for raising his boots to the face of Joe Cole.
(YELLOW) – Joe Cole (disent)
for Drogba’s case, i’m not sure whether it’s a red or a yellow.
the man of the match was definitely Van Der Sar.
IF Terry hadn’t missed, the award will definitely go to Peter Cech, but this is football, he’s gotta accept that.
secondly, Drogba is a good footballer without doubts, but judging his integrity, he’s beaten down to the lowest. (falling down so easily & losing his temper)
Makelele should be sold off as soon as possible, he’s getting too old to be playing in one of the fastest league in the world, EPL.
thirdly, i agree with rvg.
ronaldo ain’t the best footballer yet, no doubt he has the skills. however, he doesn’t have the leadership yet, he needs more time to be matured.
lastly, to shawn (post 51), please get it clear that when people says ‘missed’, its doesn’t necessarily have to be out of the target, it could be because the keeper saved it.
and it definitely ain’t 50/50 even if its on target, get ur % right dude.

as an arsenal fan i thought both teams did play very well, first half manu controlled the game and made few very good chances! but 2nd half chelsea came back (physically they were strongest) and they also had very good chances..
so guess it was good match after all, and i think overall it isn’t unfair that manu won, if you look at the whole tournament and their season it was manu who impressed most !
p.s. shame they had to ‘fight’ in the end …
caz | May 22nd, 2008 @ 6:05 am
Great game.. very tense.. Ronaldo was amazing no question, totally outplayed Essien in the first half- Ronaldo + Evra link-up was unstoppable for a long time.. 2nd half chelsea played better, but the game should have been over at half time(3-0 to MU)..
lol at ben’s ideas for the cards.. at least 3 Chelsea players should have been off.. Drogba was right to be sent off – he slapped the guy, how can u let someone off with that.. Maloda (or Makalale can’t remember) should have been sent off for his takle on ronaldo in the 1st half.. referee should have given a lot more yellows to a lot of the chelsea players.. every time they had a ‘foul’ there was 6 of them in the referee’s face.. as for Tevez’s yellow – what was that for? he was defending himself from all the chelsea players.. and Scholes?… don’t talk about cards lol.. chelsea were luckyy there..
anyways.. MU won :D (a team that “sux” does not win the CL lol)

The referee should have had a medal as well because he gave absolutely everything to United, he was a disgrace and obviously has not forgiven Chelsea for accusing him of getting it wrong in the semi finals a couple of years ago when Chelsea played Liverpool and he awarded the goal that should never have been given. What I would really like to know is why did the linesman put his flag up when Chelsea were attacking in the box and then put his flag down again. If it was for a utd free kick then he would have left it up but it was obviously for Chelsea and it may well have been a penalty but he put the flag back down and you can`t say he was playing advantage as the Chelsea player had utd players around him. Ferdinand should have seen red but got away with a yellow, if he had got past ferdinand then he was clean through on goal, but once again the referee has bottled it. This ref should never have been given the job because it`s obvious he has not forgiven Chelsea and he got his revenge last night.
Absolute disgraceful refereeing and should never be allowed to take charge of a top match again especially Chelsea games.
WHU | May 22nd, 2008 @ 6:44 am
Tevez should be booked because he didnt practise “Fair Play”. I doubt any of you guys know what that is so I’m better off keeping my mouth shut. BTW he was the one who started the whole gangfight thing. Not saying he sucks or anything, but he deserved to be booked. He played well and full of energy. GJ.
Kudos to MU for winning the CL!:)

Talk about a sore loser. Have some pride and accept the defeat gracefully.
It went to penalities so at the end of the day, Chelsea still could have won it regardless of what you thought of the ref’s decisions.
caz | May 22nd, 2008 @ 7:18 am
how did Tevez start it? he put it out and immediately 4 or 5 chelsea guys were in his face, not much he could do.. btw anyone think that drogba’s slap had anything to do with Vidic accusing him of diving earlier last week?
I know what ‘fair play’ is but didn’t think u could get booked for it.. and he did the right thing as chelsea kept doing the same to us all game..
The referee was pretty fair really.. he did make a few little mistakes (ronaldo’s shot-corner? etc) but not much.. he could easily have sent off a couple of the chelsea players if he wanted ‘revenge’ and it would have been acceptable too they should all have had yellows for dissent..
get over it.. man u won fairly.. they deserved the win.. chelsea only got to ET and penalties through a pub team goal – it was extrememly lucky.. whereas man u should have been 3-0 up.. o well.. games over.. wait till next season and stop the complaining..

I think any reasonable United fan will say we rode our luck last night. We dominated the first, they got a lucky break and dominated the second. Extra time was even stevens.
Overall – I mean over the course of the season, the past ten years, the past 50 years in fact – its United that deserve it though.
Chelsea shouldn’t be too distraught – I imagine with Abramovich’s deep pockets their time will come again.
For now let’s just enjoy the feeling!

Yes Man U dominated the game, yes i admit Chelsea had more shots, 20+ i guess? but, according to the stats, they had only 1 shot on target, the others where just blindly long range shots, hitting the bar is also considered off target, Man U has at least 5 shots on target, which nearly lead to goal. Chelsea didn’t really put a good finish to their shot efforts enough. Whatever you guys wanna argue, Man U are already Champions, so anything you guys say wont really leave a impact on the fans.

I think Hargreaves showed he is a top and perhaps a little underated player. Been in and out of the starting line-up all season. He showed he has the experience, he looked really sharp last night. His penalty was the best-struck by far.
For me, Chelsea are, of course, unlucky. Penalties is always a lottery. All it takes is for John Terry to slip, and it’s all over.
Both these teams are among the top 5 in the world. Little separates them. They have different strengths which make them difficult to beat. For Chelsea, it is the strength. For Man Utd, it’s the clever quick one-touch passing that is so great to watch.
What won it on the night was Man Utd’s compusure relative to Chelsea’s. I’m talking specifically about Drogba here. His sending off is deserved. It’s a shame for Chelsea because they really could have done with his penalty skills. It’s of course a bigger shame for himself personally. He’s shown that on the occassions he leaves his attitude in the training room, he can definitely perform on the big stage. Think in the FA Cup final two years ago against United. Or more recently in the latter games in the League against United or Liverpool. Against the bashing by Benitez about him being Didier Diver, he pulled his socks up and did the business. But for the Champion’s league final, he didn’t control his attitude, and saw red.
He’s a great player but with a bad attitude. He could be greater if he had the attitude of someone like Ryan Giggs. Giggs in my opinion is a model professional. Gets his head down and does the job his manager sets him out to do with little back-chat. Drogba, when he doesn’t control his attitude, is Chelsea’s weakest link.

wow… this game turned out to be dirty and extremely compedetive… As a Chelsea Fan i must say that luck was on MAnU’s side. I need to give credit to ManU for a great game, especcially Ronaldo and Vidic. as to rooney, beisdes that cross he didnt really do much i think. I like chelsea and wanted them to win… but i was not satisfied with eather their behavior or manU. There were some dirty chelsea play and some dirty Manu paly 2. Ronaldo great player, trully magical (so there is no excuse for him to miss that penalty… he is just to emotional, cause he cries all the time ==> when he falls , when He wins, when he loses… but it doesnt metter cause he is awesome) As to my team, i say maybe next year… Chelasea fought well, and deserves to b a champion as much as ManU but the Stuiped rain made the grass wet, and Terry slipped… ) Horrible attitude… Awesome Game.. really intence. Gratz to ManU fans, and to the chelsea fans dont give up, keep supporting and we will succed !!!!!!! hooah !

Come on people, show some class and maturity. The Champions League final this year was an incredible match, definitely one for the ages. Ya, there were some that expected more, but if you actually watched the game, any one with common sense would know that it was football @ it’s finest, with two clubs who truly earned and rightly deserved to be there. Ya, it had a bit of a slow start, but we also didn’t have to wait very long to see world class football. Cristiano’s goal was excellent, but credit to Scholes/Brown for their exceptional 1-2 passing. But Cristiano’s goal is a perfect metaphor for his play & performance, especially this season … up & beyond the competition. Yes, many love to hate … but whether you love or hate him, he’s pretty much achieved the HIGHEST honours in the football world, that many great players still dream and fantasize over. He was the key to winning the league not only last year, but definitely this year. And he was suspended in the early goings of this season, which was by far the worse times for ManU. But as soon as he returned, he put those God-given talents to work, and just steam-rolled his opponents. Went on a scoring rampage. For a few games, he was averaging braces (2 goals). But he pretty much scored in every game, but definitely in the important games, such as in the CL. But anyhow, won the league, won the golden boot (With 42 goals…almost double from last year (25 goals), and he was head to head with Drogba for top scorer for most of last season, and ended up finishing 2nd or 3rd last season for goals) for not only the premier league (and many of those 42 goals were nothing but breathetaking … free-kick against Portsmouth, anyone? Back-Heel against Aston Villa? Flying Header against Roma? And the list goes on…), but the top football experts also say for the entire football world for this season, in terms of club football. And also the leading scorer for the CL (8 goals). Furthermore, was voted by his OWN premier league colleagues as the PLAYER OF THE YEAR … for TWO years straight. Last person to do that was Thierry Henry, if I’m not mistaken, but the difference is Henry accomplished that, but did not win the coveted CL …. but Cristiano did. And he’s only 23.
GD | May 22nd, 2008 @ 2:03 pm
Yes, you can say that Cristiano might not be the best EVER, obviously, ppl cannot say that because his career is still in progress, it hasn’t even peaked yet. But there’s a reason why he was in the top 3 for FIFA Player of the Year, and also THE player of the year for the Premier League for 2 straight years. And anybody with any common sense would know that it would be cynical if Cristiano was not named THE FIFA Player of the Year for this season. He was surely above and beyond all of football’s elites this year. Anything short of that would be DISRESPECT. What he accomplished this year were vital to the achievement of the not only the Premier league, but the Club Football world as well, being the vital component to the winning of the Champions league. All he is pretty much lacking is the World Cup, and he would be set for 2 lifetimes, in terms of football achievements … but there will still be those that love to hate. Again, love him or hate him … give the player the respect that is due, cuz the man has earned the title as arguably the best footballer in the world @ the MOMENT, not EVER, the MOMENT, but will definitely be a legend by the end of his career. Remember, he’s only 23 and has accomplished SO much already … and the scary thing is, will only keep getting better and has MANY more years left … There’s a good reason why they say if he were to be transferred to Real Madrid, it would break the world transfer record … for 100 million euros, just to transfer Cristiano. And he would be breaking the record which was set by the one and only … Zinedine Zidane. So to those ignorant ones, come correct before passing judgement.

But anyway, the Champions league final was nothing less than great. ManU were dominant in the 1st half, but Chelsea were in the driver’s seat for the majority of the second half. I agree in that ManU could’ve been up 2-3 goals, but Petr Cech was definitely up to the task. And on the other end, Chelsea definitely had their chances, but clearly Van Der Sar (and also the post. lol.) were also up to the task. And I also agree that Cristiano was definitely better in the 1st half, but @ the same time he was the main source for ManU’s attack in the 2nd, generating some great runs, and was actually distributing alot more than I expected. I was actually hoping to see him shoot more in the game, but majority of the times he went on the attack and then layed it off, which also created chances, but at the same time he was shooting alot less than normal. But him & Evra were fantastic as well, a great 1-2. Vidic, and Carrick as well. On the flipside, Terry played excellent as well (aside from the penalty kick, which was def. unfortunate, poor lad) for the majority of the game, with a game-saving header on Giggs in the late stages of the 2nd half. Lampard was also a constant threat and same with Drogba. Kalou was also a great addition as soon as he entered, creating and posed a threat most of his possesions. As good as Drogba was, that slap was unnecessary and uncalled for … tainted his performance @ that instance and definitely deserved a red. I wasn’t exactly sure what Tevez did to create the clash, but Drogba was totally unprofessional. Great player for sure, but that definitely was not professional in the least bit, especially in club football’s biggest stage. And to make matters worse, he took his sweet ol’ time to get off the pitch. Real classy there, Drogba … If only he kept his act together, we could’ve easily seen a different end result to this final. But that’s what seperates the good from the great, those who are able to keep their composure to the very end. Which also brings me to the fact that tho Cristiano had an excellent game, I personally think that he hesitated way too long on his penalty kick (even longer than he usually would on his penalty shots/kicks, which as a result gave Cech the opportunity to stay composed and collected. The man is on top of the football world @ the moment, but he is at the same time also just human and will never be perfect, no has and ever will be. But anyway, to the Chelsea side, you definitely put up a heck of a battle, even to the very end. And without a doubt, are definitely one of the world’s top football clubs, no doubt about it. And I hope that Avram Grant can be rewarded for the results of a Chelsea side which early on this season, were not seen to be able to achieve what they were actually able to accomplish at the end of this season. 2nd in not only premier league, but the club football world as well. So hats off to the Chelsea side; players, fans & all. And to the Champions … Keep up the excellent football, and no matter what anyone says, when it comes down to it … ManU is @ the Top right now, in not only in one, if not the top league in the world, but on top of the football world as well. Let’s go for that treble next season. And as for Arsenal, Nasri would be a HUGE addition … and for the Reds, Torres is nothing but Top class, and if the Gareth Barry rumour pulls thru, they will DEFINITELY make some noise next year. Anyway, Joga Bonito … can’t wait for Euro 2008.

I have to say that chelsea were very lucky to even make it to extra time.
Lampard’s goal was lucky for 2 reasons: 1. deflections dropped it off Ferdinand’s back (which isnt a mistake but really just luck)2 the finish would probably have been saved by VDS if he hadn’t slipped on the pitch while coming out. It wasn’t an unstopable strike by any means.

It’s seriously annoying how people are trying to pick holes in United’s tournament! Barcelona did not outplay us, they played the way they typically do, with lots of posession, but didn’t create any real chances with it. United did what they do best, hit them on the counter, and that’s why we won the semi final.
As for the final, United dominated the first half, should have scored 3 and Chelsea’s goal was very fortuitous. However, the goal did spur Chelsea into life, and they got more posession after that, but like Barca before didn’t do a great deal with it (a moment of magic from Drogba isn’t a real chance, and Lampard’s snapshot was half a chance!)

it is not luck ManU wins ..ManU fought harder than Chelsea.
1.Yeah Terry miss the penalty but chelsea can still win and they didnt.
2.ManU fought Barca and Roma..
3. Chelsea has all the luck before reaching the final..own goal by Riise and easy match against Fenerbache.

If Man U are truly better than Chelsea, they wouldn’t have needed sudden death in the PSO to prove it and they wouldn’t have lost to Chelsea a few weeks ago.
Drogba’s behavior in this game was less than stellar, but I’ve also seen a lot of class from him in the past.
Ronaldo is not the best. He might be some day, but he isn’t yet.

umm yeh it was entertaining final would have preffered barca to b dere but ahh well!! anyway story of the game was: man utd dominated 1st half after that chelsea domanited till penalties after that is matter of luck!!
chelsea hit the wood work few times, giggs had a glorious chance to put the game in the bag but shot strait at cech!! hit n miss game all around!!
for me tevez is man utd’s best player hope barca look to grab him for next season cause this days contracts don’t mean **** as players leave all year round!!!!

lol you guys are sooo funny…It’s football ffs, that’s why you can’t predict it and that’s why luck is a factor as well. BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO is tighten your defense, sharpen your offense and play with discipline and passion, dont go around slapping players for no reason, dont keep shouting at the referee when he said “no”….. If you don’t believe me on these, try to step out of your small dark room and play football ffs.
For Chelsea, well… those things happens. stupid slap by drogba, this was probably his last match. I have a lot of respect for John Terry and feel bad for him. And from what I read recently, Anelka is going to be veryyyy annoying for you Chelsea fans..lol
However, grats to United ! lady luck surely played a part, nonetheless, Champion of England, Champion of Europe…now for world domination..lol and I think we should sell Ronaldo when he’s 28-29 and put an exorbitant amount of price tag on him.. I bet those spanish clubs will still go for him lol.. and with that money we can build ANOTHER set of champions.
NOTE: I think both teams deserve it, if you can split the cup in two I think everyone will be glad to. BUT this is a competition, there’s bound to be a loser and a winner… be wise Chelsea, try next year.:d

NOTE to celsea fans: Woddworks don’t count + tho we didn’t hit, we cud have just as well buried it in 1st half as u cud hev scored instead of hitting the posts …

seriously moe? youve had some pretty stupid posts, but this goes up at the top of them.
Ronaldo was the best player on the pitch. If you need reminding of what he did, there are a few youtube vids of all his touches during the game. basically everthing he did turned to gold. rooney had some freaking amazing passes. shouldve had an assist.
the luck was with chelsea, taking a shot from 30 yards at a standstill and bouncing it off a post is pretty lucky. lampard was in ET so that never should have occured. United should have been 3-0 up in the first half. 2 for tevez and ronaldo’s. ballack was lucky not to get a call when he ran through ferdinand’s back to create their one decent chance. lampards goal was **** lucky and you cant call it anything but. 3 deflection and VDS slips on the way out. a slip gave them a chance, and a slip took it away. chelsea had more shots, but they also had practically 0 penetration. everything was from 25 yards out. i dont call that domination.
the pks were a lottery, but the deserving side came out on top.
Free Bets | May 23rd, 2008 @ 10:19 am
Great game. Will no doubt be referred to as a classic in the future. The fact it went to penalties and then had to go to sudden death reflects just how evenly matched these two sides were. i am glad Utd won though, they have been the best team voer the full season.

Watch Terry’s penalty again, he makes perfect contact with the ball and then slips after, he cant blame the slip, he missed, simple as that, there was no luck there for Man U.

besides the goal he did nothing. if you look at the videos of ronaldo’s touches during the game he dribbles himself into a corner then passes it backwards. all he did was whine when he was tackled by joe cole and essien. essien was a ***** in the first half and that is why he got the goal and why he was able to do anything in the first half. second half he was non existent. I dont know how he got the man of the match when he almost ruined man u’s chances of winning. the only reason he got it was because they won. lampard was much more valuble for chelsea than ronaldo for man u. Ronaldo should give his award to van der sar because without him ronaldo would have been considered the worst player of the match and he would no longer be seen as the best player in the world.
ben | May 23rd, 2008 @ 4:06 pm
FIRST OF ALL, i’m neither a fan of both sides.
It’s really funny to see MU fans saying luck were on Chelsea’s side when the blues had 3 shots which hit the post (including JT’s).
well, i agree that Lampard’s goal was a real lucky one because it went through several deflections before the ball came down to him.
and also, MU fans repeating “MU should have gone 3-0 in the 1st half.”
THAT IS RIDICULOUS!
they DONT deserved to be 3-0 up because it was the players who didnt convert the chances to goals.
Lady Luck was really on MU’s side that night, no doubt. So many decisions went against Chelsea. (corners, if you had watched the match).
and MU fans, be grateful that Ferdinand didnt got a red card for raising his boots to JC’s face.
most MU fans here are so blinded by biasness that they cant tell what is right and wrong.
lastly, after watch the replay, i suppose JT didnt actually ’slipped’. he knew the ball was going to hit the post, so that’s probably the reason for him to go down the pitch.
to SueIsmail, well you really got nothing better to do i suppose.
coming here to spam after TNP’s website is down (partly because of you)? get a life dude.

Rz | May 23rd, 2008 @ 4:13 pm
so what the **** did lampard do besides scoring a fluke goal and hitting the post and nearly missing his penalty?
Rz | May 23rd, 2008 @ 4:18 pm
to all chelsea fans: WAKE UP. stop saying united are lucky cause YOU ARE THE LUCKY ONES. should have been 3-0 from the chances in the first half by tevez and carrick. and even if drogba’s shot had went in it would have been 3-2 at 90 mins. lampard’s shot that hit the post wouldnt have mattered.
so stop whining, JT deserves the misery of his miss for his spit on tevez. it’s all due to JUSTICE and FATE.
and don’t say tevez had no sportsmanship. chelsea did that to united TWICE before tevez kicked it out for a throw in.
Rz | May 23rd, 2008 @ 4:20 pm
well then, blame chelsea’s shots for hitting the post due to the players who didnt convert the chances to goals as well? game should have been finished at 90 mins anyway

thats freaking hilarious. what the **** did messi do then, to supposedly cement himself as ‘best player in the world’ and ’so much better than ronaldo’
he dribbled into walls of defenders. he lost the ball. he didnt even score. nor did he get an assist. and he didnt win.
in comparison to what ronaldo did, than messi’s ‘amazing’ performance against united was absolute **** and he should go play in league 1.
you biased idiots cannot honestly find a way to knock ronaldo off his deserved spot as best player in the world without putting on blindfolds and using fluctuating criteria as your standard.
if you want to talk about whining, watch joe cole, and probably the rest of the chelsea team as well.

Cory, so u mean the shots from Drogba and Lampard were actually lucky? -.-
yea you’re right, MU got through skills. (Tevez sliding through the grass, Carrick shooting the ball str at Cech & Giggs ‘useful’ right leg shot which was cleared easily by JT.)
if that’s the skill you’re refering to, then i’m speechless.
if you still want to talk about luck, yea, Ferdinand was ’skillful’ not to get a red card.
Cory, you don’t call this biased? then what’s the word? btw, there isint a need to caps the word ‘YOU’ because i can see what you said, clearly.
of course, i’m not a fan of Drogba, in fact i hate him alot. but i’ve got to give him credits for his skills. i’m sure if that goal did went in, all of your jaws will drop, including mine. so you definitely dont call that ‘luck’.
and to whoever mentioned Malouda tripped over his own legs and cursed the ref, you’re wrong.
watch the replay, you’d see that Ferdinand had stepped on the back of Malouda’s feet, causing him to ‘trip’.

I’m really dissapointed to see alot of ingorance coming from the majority of the Man U fans…
How can you say you pwned us or you are be far better than us?
When the Epl and CL wore very close to win it…
As for the CL…well I could say we deserved it more.
Thats a fact, and don’t try denying it cos u know it’s true.
Ok fair enough…I know luck is part of the game, and we have won sometimes with luck too…cant deny that.
But don’t be going exagerating too much that the CL was written to be yours, when you know that you won it merly by luck.
And I am very proud as a Chelsea fan that we got so far.
Even tough we did not win it…
I must say Man U have a complete squad, no doubt they have the best squad in europe.
I did not expect Chelsea to manage to stand up to Man U that well…and now you know we deserve respect because we stood up and fought like equals.
Oh and why do you envy us that Abramovic invested in our club, look in your garden and see how many hundred of millions of euros your investors helped you with!
and you wore talking about us, jeeze…

It was the most exciting and dramatic Champions League Final in a couple of years. I’m sure it was the most watched CL Final in recent times. At the end of the day the trophy was always coming back to Old Trafford. We had the most attacking prowess. Manchester United deserved the win due simply to the desire that translated onto the pitch in the opening minutes of the game. We had the most promising attacks. :d/:d:d/

You guys,
Bickering over who should have doesn’t matter. Cause Manchester won and you cannot change a thing about it.
Sure, Barca dominated, but did they score? No. Sure, Chelsea dominated and almost had the CL locked up, but did they win? No.
So Chelsea fans should get over it, and United fans shouldn’t take this win for granted, cause I can guarantee you that Terry won’t have that happen again.

ronaldo’s first and only ever goal came at the best time. but he is not the greatest player, he merely just had a great season. one great season cant define a player as the greatest player in the world. united got lucky, chelsea hits the bar 3 times (terry) and got drogba sent off. tevez is a fcuking ****** for what he did to provoke chelsea. if i was the referee, which i am not by standards, i would have either given 2 players red cards, 2 players yellow cards, or given nobody any cards; it it just unfair to give one team an advantage by sending another player off. i forgot who it was (either vidic or ferdinand), but they should have gotten a straight red for going studs up to joe cole’s face in extra time. and the supposedly “best player in the world” missed a pk, which just made my day.
to start: ‘first and only ever goal.’ its his 42nd this season alone, right? id hardly say his ‘first’
and it wasnt 1 season. it is 2 consecutive and improving the whole time. hes been best in the world this season, and imo, he was last season too. but thats another matter. he IS best in the world, not best ever.
as for being lucky: united should just the same have been 3-0 up at the half time. lampard’s goal was ridiculously lucky. and that means terry’s doesnt even come into play, because united already won 3-2.
tevez didnt slap anyone. Drogba deserved a red. tevez did deserve a yellow, but no more.

what caused the red was because tevez put the ball out near the corner flag instead of returning to the keeper. if the incident started as this, yes he was a **** to do so.
HOWEVER.. when joe cole was “injured” and man u put the ball out, chelsea too return the ball by kicking it out near the corner flag. So yeah chelsea and that bag of tricks again. whining all the way.
ronaldo is overrated i agree.. he whines too much. most importantly, the CL cup is at old trafford and no amount of flaming can change that. (unless u make a replica and display it at chelsea.)

Being a Man United supporter I had to watch MU winning the CL with tears as on that day my first date stepped back from the relationship on the prior night.
But I have seeded the fact in my mind that Man United never give up they will always come back.
And so now I am going to write an email to her that will split through the center of her heart and teach a lesson for her lifetime
GLORY GLORY Manchester United !!

that wasnt it. the penalties were a coin toss really. however, the better team won in the end. we dominated more of the game, played better ball, created the best chances, and did more with our luck. (you cant say lampard’s goal was anything but luck)
Haha…Man united dominated the game? what a load of bull. after the first half hour they were on the defense almost scoring own goals. how many shots did man u have after Ronaldo’s goal? 3 maybe? while Chelsea on the other hand had like 20 something. lol ur kidding yourself arnt ya?

HAHAHAH You’ve just shot yourself in the foot my friend. These stats say that Chelsea had more shots overall yes, but only one on target, whereas United had 5 that tested the goalkeeper for a start.
Plus they show that United had more possession.
You muppet.

goal from a throw in? did u watch the goal? perfect cross and a even better header. cech didnt even move an inch!
yes barcelona dominated..but did they score? no! means united’s defensive tactics worked well! this shows we r not only an attacking/ counter attacking side. we’re also probably the best playing a defensive game!
who ever u support..better luck next time for watever

everyone cool it.
football is a corporate game.
oil is a corporate game.
whoever has the highest stakes, usually can buy the right workers (players).
the right amount of bribe $ usually is the ticket success.
coaches, players, stockholders, the workingclass, never see what goes on.
they only play for the LOVE of the game.
be resolved to have seen an entertaining game by those who control the game.
it doesn’t matter what shirt you wear….
just respect them all.
ignorance is bliss.
it is ALL a game!

Ronaldo Vs Messi: It Won’t Go Away - - The Offside - Champions League Football Blog | May 26th, 2009 @ 11:31 am
[...] Ronaldo, while he likes to run with the ball, and is very good is arguably not quite got the close control (though he crucially has more strength, when he uses it instead of going down) that Messi has. He does arguably have more to his game though. He’s got a mean cross on him and he is of course, far better in the air. [...]
