Concerning Ronaldo:
the problem with ronaldo is hes out of position. he really isnt a forward. But when we played defensive last game, and then this game with rooney out, hes being played as top striker. hes not ruud, even if he poaches like him. If you watch, Ronaldo is most deadly on the counter when hes the ball bringer when hes got rooney or tevez or both with him. messi was combining with his players like eto’o, but if ronaldo is the front man, what the heck is he supposed to do? well, not much. try and dribble through 4-5 defenders and score. that isnt going to happen against the big teams. no support+not much service= crappier ronaldo.
If you watch a few occasions when hes got players with him, like the 1-2 with tevez, and the low ball in to nani, and park, etc… he does just as good as messi. but when united play the counterattack, hes got no support. messi takes advantage of the slower build up from barcelona to have players with him, so he doesnt have to do half the work ronaldo does to do something more productive. hes can use them as distraction, as passes for a final ball, to work with for a 1-2, etc… he looks good while he does it. ronaldo has really no option except to dribble at 4 defenders, and neither messi nor ronaldo were able to do that. esp playing against top class players like ferdinand, puyol, etc…
and it also helps when trying to look good when your team has more possession, if fewer chances. more service= more time to show your stuff.
plus, messi didnt have half the pressure ronaldo had at times.
and, ronaldo played a lot of defense. He did WAY more defensively that Messi, and he did a good job defensively.
Messi’s laziness actually led to united’s goal. watch the replay, messi just stands there and lets scholes walf right past him into open space, and the ball falls to scholes and who was out of position defensively? Thats right, little messi, and goal.

Cory! Ronaldo yet again fails to shine in a big game. End of. Messi for me was MOM!
cory | April 29th, 2008 @ 10:53 pm
concerning barcelona:
you need to learn that possession isnt worth anything if you cant make any good opportunities. you were shooting from distance the whole game. United had *0% or more of the good opportunites. ronaldo pass to park, park cross to nani, tevez cross to ronaldo, ronaldo 1-2 for tevez, ronaldo cut back for nani, etc…
its great to pass around but the penetration was minimal. thats why you had 60% of possession but were still beaten.
cory | April 29th, 2008 @ 10:59 pm
and even then, with half the service, ronaldo did create a lot of opportunities for teammates.
plus, he was in position to score.
ex: nani’s break, if nani had his head up, ronaldo was in PERFECT position to tap in. thats another great trait of ronaldo.
im sick of all the people on other sites calling ronaldo **** in this game!
thats BS, he did a lot, with not much to do it with, and he did a **** of a lot more defensive work.
Col | April 29th, 2008 @ 11:27 pm
Man Utd’s weak point has always been there defense in the past in Europe. This time it has stood strong and we are now through to the final. Forget all the talk of Ronaldo not performing in big games, lets judge that after we see the final. It can be Ronaldo’s stage if he wants it in Moscow!
ManU | April 29th, 2008 @ 11:29 pm
I didnt get to watch the game. I heard Ronaldo played poorly. But only poorly in comparison with his great games I feel.
Watching the highlights from this game, Ronaldo’s contribution > Messi. The cutback cross, the 1-2, the dribble which led to the goal..I would say ronaldo did plenty.
EPL for life | April 29th, 2008 @ 11:52 pm
congrads to man u….
barca didnt seem like a team at all, they relied on long balls with no real intentions, and too many individual runs by players like messi and deco…
cant say man u played well either…. although i guess their game plan was to defend after the first goal…which they did well…
overall though, the game was boring as ****… barca really sux this year, dont for one second think that man u were unlucky to draw with barca… im an arsenal fan, but i hope manu wins it now that i no an english team is in the final for sure, cuz both chelsea and liverpool have had a lot of luck to get to get to this point
man u deserves it more than either of them.
Manu4eva | April 29th, 2008 @ 11:52 pm
look Ronaldo is a legend
just like earlier posts have stated – people who dont understand football will try to knock him for this performance BUT
if u notice- zambrotta had him marked the whole game, and on every occasion he has the ball at least another defender in milito would rush him to pressure him
Thus if Ronaldo wasnt as great as he was and barca showed him less respect by leaving him to do wateva, then he woulda ripped them apart cos he woulda been free
But his role in this tie was to take out defenders and leave for other players to shine – this is honorable by Ronaldo as this is playing for team glory, not individual glory
Ronaldo=Legend
chardballz | April 29th, 2008 @ 11:53 pm
Why do people assume Ronaldo’s cross back was an intentional pass.
It was nothing more then a fluke!
Man U have again, Like it or not, Fluked there way through a big game.
Hats off to scholes though, that was a weapon of a shot!

Well done UTD. I hope we get Chelski in the final because I just know they’ll buckle in the first 20 mins where as Liverpool, ***** as they are, will happily punch above their weight and may even nick it on penos or a dodgy goal in the extra time.

Ronaldo didnt play his best game, and did not score but he did a lot defensively and provided some good crosses and passes…and what a HUMMDINGER from Scholes!! (been wanting to use that word in a looong time)…absolutely smashed the net, no chance for Valdes…and i want to give a lot of credit to Van Der Star for keeping a clean sheet…he played exceptionally well and kept a lot of shots at bay; great diving save to deny Messi a goal and made the fella look like a clown…how about that for composure! He was tops, and i think its because of his great team spirit that MU carried on through as the winners of the match…he is a brilliant goal keeper…DUTCH POWER!!

cory | April 30th, 2008 @ 2:25 am
hmm, got through the first half, and discounting neutral moves, messi screwed things up 8 times, and made 5 good plays.
Ronaldo had less than half his service, made 3 good plays, and screwed up 4 times.
Ronaldo has a better ratio so far.
next half tomorrow, its late.

cory is just expressing his opinion, and as if thats illegal or something
1 on 1 and the winner knows more? you must be kidding me, then all the commentators have to be ex-world champions in football, get a life, mate
Messi and Ronaldo are both world class players, its pointless to compare both of them, they just have different style, ok? How do you compare Peri and Maradona? I dont give a **** to ‘who is better’, i just know that both are legend.
About your point, ‘Messi dribbles past Ronaldo for a couple of times’ , so what? If Ronaldo can stop Messi 1 on 1, I guess he will be a defender now. For the point that Messi dribbling past United players,
first of all, Messi is good
second, United players have to back off to allow some spaces for Barca because if you mark them too tight, you will be torn apart by their short passings.
Again, Messi and Ronaldo are both good players and have already proved their worth in this world. Whatever you say, you cannot deny Ronaldo’s goal record, at least no one can achieve as much as he does. So just try to appreciate his effort and stop saying bull**** and grow up.

I wouldn’t say that ronaldo that ronaldo did plenty #11 ManU. You know everyone calls, the best player of the world, I think he’s an arrogant *******. Messi is the worlds best, no one can do as he do. He got that unique skill, that he doesn’t have to do all that ****, that ronaldo does, but he can do whatever he wants. And it also shows what kin a footballer ronaldo is, when he cries like a little baby, everytime he falls. And when he does the freekick, he doesn’t care the least, what has happened to the opponent.

lol lol @ cnowdc, so you’re a chelsea fan huh ? lol that says it all.. :)) you should worry more about your unproductive strikers :))
Messi is good…but does he have 38 goals this season ??? I dont think so…He can sure run with the ball, dribble past defenders…but then can he score ??? I doubt so. Moreover, ANY footballer knows that you can’t just dribble the ball to score goals, can you ??? So let me repeat myself, Messi is GOOD, but judging from the performance at Nou Camp and OT, he still need to work real hard to refine his finishing skills.
AND BTW I am not a fan of MU just because of Ronaldo, so I dont really care if messi was better than him on that match or if he looked like a clown or whatever..I was a fan even before he came to MU.. and I don’t think Ronaldo can manage to score 38 goals without the help of his teammates.

Top banana!
Yeh Messi was incredible, looked like he was from another planet, but as howie astutely points out he doesn’t score 30-odd goals a season (even when he’s NOT injured.)
He probably can be the best player in the world in a few years, but not quite yet.
Ronnie was less spectacular last night but his performance demonstrated his maturity, he made the right runs, gave the right passes – and it was HIS threat which created the chance from which we scored. That’s his value – irrespective of whether he’s on the top of his game every game.

Messi was a selfish hogger, he can’t be compared to Maradona he would make a huge impact on any team he joined like napoli.
Ronaldo played well, I was impressed by Park’s crosses from either sides.
Nani made a great Run.
Deco’s shots were rubbish, especially the second one he should’ve gotten better contact.
Frank Rijkaard is a complete **** for not playing Henry from the start. Henry was Barca’s most dangerous player at the end, plus he has good experience against United’s defenders.

like an old man? what is that supposed to mean? like, someone with actual intelligence, or someone who knows a lot more than you, or someone who uses long words you cant understand, like ‘the.’
First, read the comment:
I never said Ronaldo had a ‘better game’ if you want to use that term. Ronaldo was much less involved, but that had a lot to do with the tactics of the game and the role Ronaldo played. Ronaldo had an advanced role, not his normal position, and he did very well fufuilling his role. He played as well as anyone could have asked him to. If you watch, Messi’s most dangerous plays came from having 30 yards to dribble because Evra was upfield. When Ronaldo was up front, the barca defenders NEVER gave him that much room. That would be stupid. So, Messi had less pressure, and has a better game because of it. Barca had also the majority of possession because that is there style. That means messi got more of the ball. With that possession, they still created less major chances than United, which is United’s style. but back to the 2 stars. With the possession style, it allows a lot of support to flood the box, so messi can pass the ball away before he gets in over his head in pressure. even still, messi lost the ball on his runs more often than he kept it. Ronaldo did not have half the support messi did, so he had no choice but to try and beat 4 world class defenders. that was a feat neither ronaldo or messi were able to do. On the times Ronaldo had support up with him, he made great runs, and was just as creative as messi with the passes. However, he did not have that support often. As a result of all this, messi had a ‘better’ game, but ronaldo did a great job playing out of position, without his favorite partner, and fufilling a role that really is not beneficial to his play style.
So, yes, messi had a ‘better’ game.
but that means absolutely nothing as to who is a better player.

I think that it was a good game over all. I mean i never really expected Barceona to win, and putting Ronaldo Fordward is just stupid. Another stupid thing is not starting Henry for Barca, and they put deco and toure instead of giovanni or goodjohnson. I think Barca would have much better of a chance having Goodjohnson on then Toure..

I’m so disapointed whith Barcelona :((:((:-w:-w they did so many mistakes in thier defence. That’s the first reason why Manchester United won.The final won’t be interesting ,besause Man U is the best team in the English league and they’ll win no matter who will play with them and it’s very sad:((:((:((:((:(( And i don’t understand why Barca’s manager put Henry in sub.? It’s the second reason why Barca lost.
Reds89 | April 30th, 2008 @ 10:55 am
Savage night…..:d…..Im so happy for scholes, for scoring the goal and getting the chance to play in the final…..Also i wasnt at the match, but a big tanx to all the fans who were because it was a super atmosphere….Now we need the same thing on saturday to keep us goin in the league:):)
Vin | April 30th, 2008 @ 10:57 am
i am in a big misunderstanding why did henry stay on the sub:((:((:(( and barca lost!!!
what did that iniesta do there in henrys place huh?
besides ronaldinho’s out with an injury…the whole barca spirit was down and something was wrong….:((:((:((:((:((

One of the most nerve racking games i have ever watched. So glad we came though it with a good performance. Great goal from the ginga ninja. But my praise goes to tevez who chased everything all game. Well done to the back four simply immense.

it so obvious that Messi is a lot better than ronaldo… he dribbles past ronaldo for a couple of times that ronaldo cant even stop Messi… and he dribbles past over evra, scholes, carrick, park, and most of m.u players, while ronaldo cant even dribble past zambrotta… AND thats why BBC give Messi better high rating than ronaldo…

Yeh Messi was incredible, looked like he was from another planet, but as howie astutely points out he doesn’t score 30-odd goals a season (even when he’s NOT injured.)
Ronnie was less spectacular last night but his performance demonstrated his maturity, he made the right runs, gave the right p***es – and it was HIS threat which created the chance from which we scored. That’s his value – irrespective of whether he’s on the top of his game every game.
agreed.
You sound like a old man when you write that ****, Messi was much better than Ronaldo in this game!
like an old man? what is that supposed to mean? like, someone with actual intelligence, or someone who knows a lot more than you, or someone who uses long words you cant understand, like ‘the.’
With the possession style, it allows a lot of support to flood the box, so messi can p*** the ball away before he gets in over his head in pressure. even still, messi lost the ball on his runs more often than he kept it. Ronaldo did not have half the support messi did, so he had no choice but to try and beat 4 world cl*** defenders. that was a feat neither ronaldo or messi were able to do. On the times Ronaldo had support up with him, he made great runs, and was just as creative as messi with the p***es.
Sometime back Messi’s game was flawed and selfish …..if you watched matches in the La Lega he miffed loads of sitters …Ronaldo is more professional and puts to bed half chances against any team – he is more effective in the modern day game
cory | May 1st, 2008 @ 9:37 am
Ronaldo was more professional:
He DIDNT go for glory, he put the TEAM first. Despite that, I will not be surprised to hear some clueless idiot somewhere say next week “ronaldo is a selfish egotistical *&%$&^% who only cares for personal glory and awards and doesn’t caer about the team”
He was very professional, he DEFENDED well. Won’t be surprised to hear more clueless idiots say that he doesnt do defense.
He PASSED EARLY and OFTEN, but I wont be surprised next week to hear some clueless idiot say that “hes a selfish one trick pony that only cares about scoring and dribbling and does not give his teammates any chances and does not pass”
In this game alone, Ronaldo showed a huge number of qualities that hes is often criticized for not having. Instead of slamming him for his performance, realize that he just met and exceeded all of the new expectations that were thrown at him by critics. Unselfishness, passing, and defending. Not the typical Ronaldo, but again the world’s greatest player is showing that he can do everything and he doesn’t care what happens to him so long as United wins.
Ajit | May 1st, 2008 @ 10:43 pm
Ronaldo is a class player and so are the other players in Man United going by their determination and potential. If they were not class they would not be where they are or they would have to make themselves class to keep their feet in the club, coz thats what Manchester United is all about they set the expectations HIGH Just one match with Barca is not enough to let Ronney down – he has got umpteen performances for club and country to prove his mettle

And dont you talk about getting 36 goals in a season.Cronaldo takes all the freekicks, all the penalties, he is SELFISH player. When Tevez was on a hat trick and Manu had a penalty, Ronaldo didnt even let Tevez take the penalty
Messi missed many games. Barcelona wasn’t without the services of Eto’o, Roonie, Puyol and Henry has been total bull ****.

Weird stats that some people found on a forum:
VERY INTERESTING GUYS DON’T YOU THINK
For the superstitious among us, here’s proof that Manchester United will win the Double this season:
For the past 7 seasons there has been a correlation between the champions of England and Spain:
year—England—-Spain
2001—Man Utd—Real Madrid
2002—Arsenal—-Valencia
2003—Man Utd—Real Madrid
2004—Arsenal—-Valencia
2005—Chelsea—-Barcelona
2006—Chelsea—-Barcelona
2007—Man Utd—Real Madrid
2008—Man Utd?–Real Madrid?
Madrid lead by 10 points with 5 matches remaining…
(And Valencia are two points from relegation…)
There is also an interesting correlation between Real Madrid and the Champions League winners for the past 5 seasons:
In the table below:
Team A = Team that knocked out Real Madrid
Team B = Team that knocked out Team A
year—Team A————-Team B——Champions
2003—Juventus———–AC Milan—–AC Milan
2004—Monaco————-Porto———-Porto
2005—Juventus———–Liverpool—-Liverpool
2006—Arsenal————-Barcelona—Barcelona
2007—Bayern Munich—AC Milan—–AC Milan
2008—Roma—————-Man Utd—–Man Utd?
Whoever beats the team that knocks out Real Madrid wins the title.
This year Roma knocked out Real Madrid, and Manchester United knocked out Roma…
