Although i do wish Ronaldo would play through more challenges and complain a little less, i still believe he is the best player in the world at the moment. He is still young and needs to mature, lets not forget the gerrard, lampard, and beckam misses in the world cup in past years. Great players fall, it’s how they rebound that shows their true character. Lets wait and see how he and the reds perform at old trafford before we start making assumptions

As a MAN U fan, i was disappointed with the way MAN U lose the possession so easily, no counter attack or what so ever. For me, the worst player on the pitch was Carrick and Park, both of them didn’t really do anything at all, and Carrick passes sucks. As for CR7, i don’t really blame him, he didn’t really got the ball because he was mark my so many players. But i think SAF was trying to ask the players not to over do them self, because they have a very important game on the weekend, which is against Chelsea. As for people said that CR7 dive… **** .

I’m not hating on anyone except the people who were talking **** about Riise for scoring that own goal. It’s strange that it’s OK to attack Riise for making a mistake, but when Ronaldo does it, forget about it — it’s a mistake anyone could make. The double standards are killing me.

not really, he was the front man and he was isolated. what the heck is he supposed to do if hes not getting the ball? summon it by telekinesis? right. seriously.

if SAF still using this strange formation at future games, guaranteed that mu won’t have anything wo win this season.
As an mu fan, i’m a little dissapointed with fergi’s decision to put rooney as right-mid, ronaldo as striker, hargreaves as rb. I think hargreaves should be put in the middle, let him spoil xavi, iniesta and deco. Rooney should be at the front and CR7 should have a free role.
I hope, next time mu would be better.
but as for the yesterday game, barca deserved a winning, absolutely.

I love how all the Man U fans were complaining about what a boring match the Liverpool – Chelsea match was, and then the Red Devils come out with this load of garbage, BORING, at least our match had goals, and near misses.
Ricious Man | April 24th, 2008 @ 5:45 am
was qiute a boring match, but never expected for Man U to play so poor…
also I never expected for Barca not to score at home….
maybe things would have beeen different If Barca would have had Ronnie, Henry and Dos Santos playing yesterday. I think they would have won if they had these players playing.
manutdblogger | April 24th, 2008 @ 7:24 am
Yep – granted this WAS a boring match, but nobody should really be surprised by that.
All the pre-match talk about this being a thrilling encounter between two attacking sides was nonsense.
United were always going to play 4-5-1 (looked like 4-6-0 a lot of the time) and stifle the play. Yep Barca had tons of possession, yep United hardly had an attack beyond the penalty and Carrick’s chance – but who cares? Barca were limited to two real chances. You can look fancy in front of goal all you like – you need to score on your own patch!
Had Ronnie put that spot kick away the job would have already been completed.
As it is we’ll just have to BATTER THEM at Old Trafford.

Perfect tactics, Man United shows great ability to do what is needed. You can’t attack full throttle with 4-4-2 away to Barcelona, because if u make one mistake they will punish you. But during the hole game, they produce one good chance when Etoo was played through, other than that there were easy saved shots from outside the box. United probably had the best chance of the game with Carricks turn on the left side of the box, if he plays it in its a goal, unfortunately he didnt look up..
Barca passed the ball around and got nowhere for 90 minutes. Ronaldo was covered by 2-3 Barca players all game and I agree United was defending deeper than needed some periods of the game.
The 2:nd clear penalty is then one one with Ronaldo on the right side of the penalty box being tripped thigh high with the defenders both legs wrapped around him rugby style…. but you never get two penalties in a CL semifinal, no matter how clear they are, never happens…
Ronaldo missed a penalty, so what?! It happens to all great players once in a while. Top striker in the premiership AND the champions league this season, and thats from midfield. He also has set up a number of goals for teammates… He will finish Barca off if he gets one or two chances in the return leg, be sure of that.
United – Barcelona should have been the final, because it’s the two best teams in europe this season easily. Chelsea and Liverpool is no comparison this season…
Ronaldo | April 24th, 2008 @ 8:21 am
WHYYYY RONALDO?!?!?! Don’t worry you’ll do better at OT! And at least we did not concede. Don’t listen to these *****, you have nothing to prove, they’re all jealous they will NEVER EVER EVER score that many goals in THAT position, even up front. D I C K s.

RedDevil – good to know that some ppl actually talk some sense on these pages!
You’re right – United v Barca as a ONE OFF – i.e. the final, would have been the perfect match for all concerned, including the neutrals.
Worst case scenario is meeting the scousers in the final – apart from a few good fights around Moscow…hehe

thats a pretty big generalization, and an incorrect one at that.
yes, it was a boring match, but you peeps have to realize that United do know how to play ugly when they need to. Its what separates us from arsenal. other than the PK miss, this was a well executed away strategy. A great perormance from the lads. the only thing missing was an uncharacteristic inability to counterattack. regardless, it was still a solid display that got the required job done.
Red Devil | April 24th, 2008 @ 9:40 am
I live in Sweden and I’ve been to OT 25 times and have seen United abroad in 8 different countries… I’ve been a club member since 1985 aswell as member of the scand. supporters club.
I pay thousands of pounds to watch my team play and I would travel anywhere in the world to do so… why should your “local” support be anymore sincere??
You probably dont even live in Manchester… Ive been there 25 times and people are real nice to us abroad fans, and are always amazed by the love we have of a club thousands of miles away from our homes…
manutdblogger | April 24th, 2008 @ 10:05 am
Red Devil – you’re right again, pal.
The game is now global and globally commercialized – it is because of that, that we’re able to buy the best players, pay the highest wages and ultimately PERPETUATE United’s fine, ‘local’ tradition. Ppl say money corrupts the game – it’s not as black and white as that.
Of course we’d love to see 11 local lads out there. Of course we’d love the Glazers to disappear, but we have to get real.
As far as foreign fans or glory hunters are concerned, I say this as a lifelong local fan:
It doesn’t matter whether you are from Salford or Shanghai or wherever – as long as you understand the United philosophy and know your United history, every fan is welcome. The more the merrier.

I never said anything about location or knowledge of the team. It’s about loyalty and sticking with your team through the good and the bad. I believe that there is a huge segment of Man Utd. supporters who change clubs more often than people dye their hair, and they do it because they want to be on the winning side. I don’t have a problem with real United supporters; it’s those who would jump ship at the first sign of trouble who irritate me.
brooklynite | April 24th, 2008 @ 11:57 am
we really needed Giggs, Anderson, and Vidic out there…Carrick and especially park were not playing well at all. Hopefully we can defeat chelsea and not have to worry about resting players for premier league play on tuesday…..great Job Ronaldo, Ferdinand, Evra, and tevez
kiko | April 24th, 2008 @ 12:38 pm
Quiet a shocking result considering all the headlines of how dominant EPL teams are in general. Although Barcelona didn’t win they defintely showed that they are capable of taking the game too Man Utd., honestly this is the 1st I have seen all Man Utd. with such little possesion. If I had to pick a winner I would say Barcelona had a moral victory and the boost will help them in England where both teams will go “all in”. Had a fit Ronaldinho been there playing at his peak I do believe they could have got the win no doubt.
If Barcacelona continues where they left off, keeping the ball away from Man Utd. then the numbers says they may stale mate them at worst else they should push on thru. I’ve always said the best defense is possesion, possesion , possesion.

I have seen some professional performance specially in away European games by United but this one was quite boring. When I saw the line up at first, I thought we were going for a win but then after like 5 mins, I couldn’t even make out Rooney and Park’s positions.
Given the experience and the attacking abilities that Barca possess, may be 0 – 0 isn’t a bad result after all. We could have played the beautiful game as we usually do and might have lost in a bigger margin. Look at the bright side, we are left to play 90 mins and that is going to at home. I know that most of us are not used to seeing our team out played like that. I sure didn’t expect it against Barca. They have been struggling in their league for a while. If you have noticed the back 4 were very shaky. But again, United have been very poor away in Europe for a while. There were years that we didn’t even make it through the group stage. So I guess Sir Alex is convinced to play defensive football to get the result needed and move forward.
Frankly, I understand what he is trying to achieve but I was still disappointed by our performance.I was very nervous throught the game. In my mind, the question was, when they would score not whether they would or not.I think we some how gave Barca a Psychological boost ahead of the return leg. I know the result isn’t too bad but if Barca could score, you know the uphill we might face. Just because we are playing at home, It doesn’t mean the goals will start flowing but again, I am confident that we will get a win. I don’t know how but I believe we have what it takes to win.
Ronaldo did very well as lone striker. I know he missed a penalty but that happens sometimes. All of the best players in the world that came before him had missed crucial penalties including in the world cup final games. It was just in the first mins where nobody was settled and sometimes luck is important and it wasn’t in his side yesterday. Aside that though, he performed very well.
Rooney and Park struggled a lot. Scholsy, Evra, Rio, Harg and Van De did quite well. I think so did Brown.
Somethings to take from this is that, If we decided to play defensive football, it shows that we can get results even if that is not our style of play. I believe Vida’s illness somewhat forced us to sit back and not be adventures
Although Barca had the majority of the possession, they were wasteful in front of goals. I didn’t notice that many attempts which troubled Van D.
In conclusion, We didn’t play well and the result might not be the best but we set up ourselves fairly to the return leg. I believe we have the advantage progressing.
United for life baby!

I fancy him to score on Saturday…

It’s obvious Barcelona kept the ball very well, and we got pushed to defend very deep, sometimes too deep to my liking.
I’ve travelled to Valencia, Münich, Madrid, Rome over the past Champions League campaigns and Sir.alex philosophy over the past few years has been this way in the knockout stages.
Going all rally pushing forward at the Noucamp would – in fareness to the way Barca plays at home – have been pure stupidity.
Barcelona had 1 real chance in the game inside the box with Etoo but that’s about it. The rest were all long range efforts hardly testing VDS, I guess the best attempt was the one from Thierry Henry, everything else VDS had covered with ease.
It will be a completely different game next week. Just remember the return leg last year against Roma…
United can produce a game like that again, and I’m confident we can win it, but at this level 10-15 minutes of bad football and you’re out.
It’s as simple as that.
We got a good result to take into the game next week and I’m very positive. Score first and we’ll go through, get one goal against us and it will obviously be very hard.
If we beat Barcelona and go on and win the final the hardest game of the two will probably be looked back to be the Barcelona one.

Ronaldo is a brilliant player and it shouldn’t matter if he missed a penalty. Ronaldo and rooney have made the perfect partnership up front and so have Rio and vidic. He will be awarded;
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
TOP GOAL SCORER OF PREMIERSHIP
TOP GOAL SCORER IN CHAMPS LEAGUE
and could also be lifting the premier league title and also the champions league.

I rewatched the game and took note of the things that Messi and Ronaldo did. wrote them down.
Discounting neutral things (simple passes), Good things are through balls that reach the target, good runs, great incisive passes, etc… Bad things are losing the ball needlessly, missing PKs, hitting the wall on FKs.
Im only going to count the ones when both players are on the field.
Messi did 5 good things, and 8 times he did bad things. Actually, whenever Messi tried to make a penetrative run, he lost the ball more often than not.
Ronaldo did 7 good things, and 6 bad things. 2 of those bad things were hitting the wall on a FK, and 1 was the PK. The majority of the time Ronaldo got the ball, he made something good happen. There were quite a few times hed break through the defense on his own before being fouled professionally to stop him from scoring.
I have to say after rewatching the game that Ronaldo did quite a lot. Messi really did not do much. I know Barca fans will say that Messi was getting off injury, but then again Ronaldo had no support 95% of the time, and his team had less possession and he had less service. Besides if Messi is supposedly the greatest player ever and his so far above Ronaldo then youd think hed be able to play well in this game at home with 90000 people behind him esp since hes such a great big game player as he showed on wednesday. And besides, everyone judged Ronaldo on his bad performance against Milan last year when he was playing tired and injured with a tired and injured team against a well rested team with few injuries and who were only really fighting in 1 competition.
cory | April 26th, 2008 @ 1:21 am
lets not forget that Ronaldo also had to perform the whole game on the back of a PK miss, which can really hurt a person’s confidence.
JamieLee | April 26th, 2008 @ 10:16 am
I really enjoyed the Ronaldo interview at the end. I’d never heard him speak before. I quite liked him, he didn’t sound likea footballer, some sort of dictator perhaps.

ronaldo wouldn’t have done amazing if he got the pentaly.=d>he got furstarted.its hard doing good if you just missed a pen in big stage semi final.he confundicne. and also, messi didnt **** ! all he did was do a few ttricks and pass bit.

This game was full of surprized!. I was expecting Man U to dominate and Barca to struggle. Turned out to be completely the opposite. Still, a very boring game, I like seeing Messi and Eto’o pass the ball around…but only so much, they didn’t get a lo out of it. Man U’s inability to hold on to the ball longer than 10 seconds was borderline **** play. It’s not like they tried to clear it, you could see their attempts to counterattack that would fail miserably. Ronaldo got manhandled, i think Barca’s plan of defense was to kill him everytime he touched the ball, the ref shoulda protected him more but in barca’s defense – it did work.
This game leaves us with more questions than answers. The return leg will feature 90 minutes of Messi (which was the sharpest barca player in the first leg). He and Eto’o will be well rested. I’m not sure that Man U will go with the same…weird formation they did in the first leg but its safe to say they will be looking to control and attack more which will mean 1 of 2 things. 1 – They will establish control of the ball and press on to score. 2 – This will leave them spread out and give barca the space and time they lacked last game to produce their own chances. In essence, it should be a wide open game and I hope to see a multi-goal game.
Man U has the adventage of playing home. Barca has the adventage of scoring away goals and their confidence boost from first leg. Interesting, no doub.

U haters, i guess your teams are kicked out already. One penalty miss is nothing, it’s not final yet, it’s good that he did this mistake now, he will not repeat it in final. You know how many great players missed penalty so you losers just shut your mouse, just watch his goals, of course what you were waiting from this match in Camp Nou, domination of Manchester, you stupid pumpkins:))) I laugh on you all, you don’t have any arguement you are just trash talkers. Manchester will play in Final!!!!!!!

the problem with ronaldo is hes out of position. he really isnt a forward. But when we played defensive last game, and then this game with rooney out, hes being played as top striker. hes not ruud, even if he poaches like him. If you watch, Ronaldo is most deadly on the counter when hes the ball bringer when hes got rooney or tevez or both with him. messi was combining with his players like eto’o, but if ronaldo is the front man, what the heck is he supposed to do? well, not much. try and dribble through 4-5 defenders and score. that isnt going to happen against the big teams. no support+not much service= crappier ronaldo.
If you watch a few occasions when hes got players with him, like the 1-2 with tevez, and the low ball in to nani, and park, etc… he does just as good as messi. but when united play the counterattack, hes got no support. messi takes advantage of the slower build up from barcelona to have players with him, so he doesnt have to do half the work ronaldo does to do something more productive. hes can use them as distraction, as passes for a final ball, to work with for a 1-2, etc… he looks good while he does it. ronaldo has really no option except to dribble at 4 defenders, and neither messi nor ronaldo were able to do that. esp playing against top class players like ferdinand, puyol, etc…
and it also helps when trying to look good when your team has more possession, if fewer chances. more service= more time to show your stuff.
so, again, there really isnt much you can honestly take from this performance between ronaldo and messi.
you can however take that united are team who can shut down any offense, how long has it been in europe since we’ve been scored on? someone said 360 min. thats amazing. both barca games, roma, lyon at home, all the way back to lyon away was the last time anyone got a goal on us.
