Arsenal v Birmingham - Eduardo Injury
February 23rd, 2008 . posted by admin
Update: Wenger says his initial post match comments that Birmingham captain Martin Taylor “should never play football again” were “excessive”, after Eduardo suffered a horrific injury during yesterdays clash at St. Andrews.
(AFP) Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva was taken to hospital after suffering a horrific injury in Saturday’s Premier League match at Birmingham.
Eduardo was clattered by Martin Taylor’s lunging tackle just moments after kick off at St Andrews. Taylor was sent off but the Brazilian-born Croatian needed more than eight minutes of treatment for what looked to be a serious ankle problem before being carried off on a stretcher.
Arsenal’s players were visibly upset by an injury, with several unable to look at Eduardo. The television network broadcasting the match live in England refused to show replays because the injury was so horrendous. Attention: this footage is not for the faint-hearted.

i saw the tackle on youtube moments after the game. it was disgusting. some say it was similar to alan smiths when he was on untd.
all the best for eduardo.
arsenal was playin like **** after that….theo came to the rescue scoring the 2 goals…and we had the 3 points until clichy lost his concentrration and gave a penealty….it was a tuff game for us in every way.
2nd time clichy made a mistake like that this season…
poor edu. was def one of the dirtyest injuries in football in recent years. reminds me of cisse a lil bit

This is more than horrific. No way was he going for the ball, his cleat went right in his leg. This is not only a red card for this guy, but he should be banned from the game. There is no excuse to make a tackle like that. da Silva’s career could end over that, and that is not right. I hope da Silva can just get better

if you guys watch that video closely, he did not touch any of the ball, rather what he hit was just above eduardo’s ankle. If you really watch it, you see his leg actually shift to the inside while his foot remains stationary on the ground. he’s out for the rest of this season AT LEAST. whoever said Taylor should’ve only gotten a yellow card, stop calling yourself a football fan right now.

then for every tackle that causes injury we can say “oh he’s a decent bloke, was probably trying to get the ball, it was an accident”

Just look at the grin on his face after ther tackle. If eduardo never play football again and this put an end to daily bread, Taylor should really be delt with. Being totally honest, I have seen far worse challenges that fortunately have not resulted in serious injuries to the players…
It was a very lazy attempt to win the ball (imo) and catching Eduardo where it did, caused the terrible injury…
I think the only person who can honestly say whether it was meant or not is taylor himself…
But, I think it was more of a freakish accident than anything else…

Look, its a horrible injury, but taylor went in with only one foot raised which should mean it is only a yellow, but he does raise his studs which is why the red card was given, so he’ll get an automatic 3 game ban. I cant understand the people coming on here saying he should be banned for more, it was a late tackle with studs raised, but it wasn’t violent or maliscious play. Its very unfortunate that such an injury has happened, but he’s young and hopefully can make a full recovery. All the best to Eduardo

All you idiots claiming that taylor did that on purpose to take him out for as long as possible… its complete bullshit
Comments from Wenger saying he should never play football again just shows how much of a bad looser he is, if his team dont win, he makes excuses for them.
Even steve bruce has released a statement, saying that taylor would never intentionally do that. Your using it as an excuse because you couldnt beat the mighty blues even with 10 men. And yes i do know what im talking about because i was there and the tackle happened right infront of me, and we all thought it was just gona be a yellow.
p.s
10 MEN, WE ONLY NEED 10 MEN, WE ONLY NEED 10 MEN

I don’t understand how people can say Taylor did this deliberately. Eduardo was too quick-footed for him, and passed the ball as Taylor was sliding.
Yes, it was a horrible injury, but it was just a mistimed tackle, it could happen to anyone.
To say he should be banned for as long as Eduardo is injured, or he should be banned for the season is stupid! Ben Thatcher got an 8 or 9 game ban for what he done, and he went in with intent- without hurting anyone!
This guy has just made a sloppy tackle, i’m sure he’ll realise the seriousness of it once he gets a good look of it, so just stop getting on his back!

Listen, I have had my leg broken in a football match and I know the player who inflicted the injury. If you have played football you would know that from time to time you are late for the ball because you either underestimate the speed of the opponent or you just misjudge. Sh*t sometimes happens, I feel for eduardo but thats professional sport, taylor didn’t mean it, it just happened.

I’ve been hearing a lot of nonsense on here as if Taylor has commited some kind of capital crime, and it leads me to question how many of you have actually played or experienced football first-hand at any decent level. As someone who has I’d like to shed some light on a few issues:
1. Eduardo, I feel for him, but at that, he’s ‘an unlucky guy’ at most. Imagine the exact same tackle while Eduardo’s foot is in mid-air; Eduardo falls down, get’s up and takes the free kick…simple. It’s just unfortunate that his leg is rooted to the ground at this exact moment, wich means his leg can’t recoil and hence the break is caused.
2. It’s a ‘YELLOW card’ at most. Think about what you need 2 do 2 get a red card. On this occasion,: There was NO lunge…It was ONE footed…his other leg DIDNT EVEN leave the ground…Taylor’s foot was sideways as opposed to upright [which would have suggested malice]
The plain and simple truth: Taylor went for the ball, eduardo’s a step ahead and he catches him…You see a LOT worse week in week out on MOTD. Fair enough it’s a horrific injury, but you’re letting your hearts ruin your heads. Taylor’s not dirty, do you honestly think he set out to brak Eduardo’s leg?
ray | February 23rd, 2008 @ 5:22 pm | Reply |

From a Liverpool supporter, I hope Eduardo can fully recover from this. I imagine after a few surgeries and screws he should be alright. Even thought it’s difficult to see, it looks like the break might have been just that and without serious ligament damage. We’ll see. It’s tough seeing a young, talented player go out like that.
Whoever said the red wasn’t deserved is completely incorrect. It is obvious that Eduardo was going to be first to the ball and that he was already passing it. Sliding in from the front like that as he was passing to the side is completely uncalled for. Taylor could have pulled his leg back at the last second if we wanted. Absolutely unacceptable on Taylor’s part.

i’m a HUGE liverpool fan and do not have much love for arsenal, BUT aside from that this is a sad day in football. Eduardo has both talent and class and that’s undeniable (coming from a liverpool fan!). A United fan here and I can’t tell you how much this saddens me. This is a terrible accident and I hope he recovers soon. Can any of you possibly imagine the pain he is in ? Men this is very sad and the more I see the reply(which I have stopped doing), the more I get shocked. Unlike many Arsenal players, he has a great character in my opinion. He is often focused on playing the game than tryn to tackle or argue with referees. What happened to him is something I wouldn’t even wish to my worst enemy(I don’t know who that is)…
I know Tyler might not have intended that to happen but he needs to be punished very well. The FA and other football governing bodies need to take serious measures against such individuals in order to reduce such things from happening again. His football ambition even for that matter his life could be ruined. Anyway I hope he gets better…

Liverpool fan here - first off I hope Eduardo plays again for Arsenal. It was a really bad tackle and unfortunatley for Eduardo - a freak double (or from what I’ve read triple) break. Only Martin will know whether he meant to do it intentionally or not. Doubt he’ll be banned for more than the three games due to the red card.
Again I do hope Eduardo makes a full recovery and plays again. Such a promising talent.

No, because you dont take them to hospital and check what the damage is before you decide whether to issue a red card, you look at the challenge, and make a decision.
Now at the time there wasnt much reaction from the aresnal players or any of the fans, it looked like a bad tackle, but not one so serious.
And thats why for me and the other people who were actually there, we think it was only a yellow.

If you look at the pictures you will see evidence that Taylor meant no harm. As he first makes contact his head is facing the ball, and as he goes through the tackle he sets his arms down to stop and get up and is watching the ball roll away.
Horrible accident, and best of luck to Eduardo.

After all is said and done, if footballers can’t accept the risks of getting injured, they should protect themselves. If they don’t and end up injured, it’s their own problem. As much as I have the scum of Arsenal, Eduardo is a talent. The comments of “Wait until Taylor comes here, we’ll bang him up” are the reasons that we hate you c**ts. And if you “Londoners” are all that hard, why knives and guns and s**t.

Just because he broke his leg, it doesn’t mean it immediately warrants a red, as some of you would suggest. Anyone remember Richard Wright’s collision with Luc Nilis? The most sickening leg break I have ever seen, Nilis never played again, and Wright was never the same goalie, but it was never intentional, as I don’t feel Taylor’s tackle was. I’m sad for the guy and hope he makes a full recovery, but some of your responses are way over the top. Lifetimes bans should be reserved for the kind of filthy scum, such as Roy Keane, who openly admitted he went in to end Alf Inge Haaland’s career, and Ben Thatcher who took out Pedro Mendes clearly hoping to do as much damage as possible. I hope you recover soon, Eduardo and Johnny
White.

That could be career ending. I really hope hes okay. No matter who you are a fan of, that’s not good.
The scary thing is, its not really THAT bad of a tackle. Mistimed and a little bit high.
And you wonder why players like Ronaldo jump and dive to get out of the way of some of the tackles…

Hi, a Man united fan here. I just saw the videos of the incident, and just want to wish eduardo a speedy recovery. he was a great player and hopefully he gets back on a football pitch again. I have been reading some comments from some people here saying that eduadro deserved it. No one deserves to have there career ended by a moment of madness by another player. A lot of people were complaining on BBC about arsenal players being thugs in the wake of scenes from last weeks FA cup game. I have to disagree with those people because nani had no right to show boat. he was trying to rub it in arsenal’s face which is not nice
Anyway’s GET WELL SOON EDUARDO. Oh and whenever man utd are knoced out from cup tournament the next team i always cheer for is arsenal.

If i was Taylor i would be lucky to get a red card after what i had done. It would be hard to play with fellings what i have done. If he had only yellow, it would certainly come revenge from one of arsenal players.
If I (even acidently) did this I would be happy to be sent off and even I would go away by myself, if i wasnt.
Poor Eduardo, i hope he will be back soon and Gunners burst this to win EPL for him.
and OT: I think that wasnt penalty in the end of the game and clichy made fair challege, he played ball and player made little dive, i think.
I am also interested what will Taylor say about it.

I am an arsenal fan and but I have to say some of you people have no football knowledge. Taylor DID NOT mean to break Eduardo’s leg. It was a late challenge and that is it. Eduardo is extremely unlucky and the tackle is sickening to watch. When i was much younger i broke my leg in a very similar way playing sunday league football. I knew the guy who did it to me (he want to same school as me) and he was distaught. He actually came to hospital with me rather than play the rest of the game. I am sure that Taylor feels like **** tonight, for something this bad human decency dictates that he will feel bad. you would have to be pure evil to be satified with yourself for doing that and the reaction of the players was amazing to watch. They were really shook up. Get well soon EDU

Taylor DID mean what he did - it may be true that he didn’t want to break his leg, but he DID intend to hurt him, it is freaking obvious. Steve, I also play Sunday league football, but there is a huge difference here mate - look at the replays, Taylor goes NOWHERE NEAR THE FREAKING BALL, he goes directly for his foot! It’s true that he didn’t intend to happen like this - he simply wanted a hard tackle that will keep Eduardo a little stressed until the rest of the game, SO IT WAS intentional.

wait hold on, for the idiots who really say they have a idea about football and who mostly imply that they might have, than I have to say this!!
it does not matter if Taylor meant it or not to tackle Eduardo, but he wrecked someone’s career and should now pay the concenquences!
one example!
if I have a gun and I press the trigger by mistake and I shoot someone, does that mean I’m innocent cos it was unintentional?
no for sure, cos u would be charged for manslaughter at least!
so…come on people, stop acting like fools and use ur brain’s!
and who said this is football, whoever may u be please go and watch k1, mma, ufc or sports like them, but not football!
cos u don’t know nothing about it!
u even know the term football?
it says foot to the ball not foot to foot!
oh and if I would cause to someone such a horrible tackle I would go apologize and than would be prepared for the concenquences, that’s how it should be!
but do you see Talylor doing that?
no…

This injury to a beautiful young player is heartbreaking. Eduardo is finished at the top level; a striker cannot come back from such a shattering injury.
For those who are interested let me give you one referee’s opinion (career 800+ matches). If you come in high, studs up, with your weight in the tackle and catch a player above the ankle then I am sending you off. Dean was in great position; got a good look and made the right call. There was, I would guess, never any doubt in his mind. I will never accept such tackles because they can lead to career ending injuries, as we now have abundant proof.
I doubt Taylor meant to ruin him. He just meant to stop him, foul or fair. A player of mediocre talent at most, he will become known mainly for destroying the career of a far superior footballer. That may be, after his match or season ban, punishment enough.

I feel desperately sorry for Eduardo - the result of the tackle were horrific and I feel almost in a state of shock. This was truely a bizarre and fortunately rare incident. Who could honestly say they would expect to see a man’s foot effectively snapped off in a football game as a result of a mistimed tackle? It was an accident. I have some sympathy for Taylor, he surely did not mean to break Eduardo’s leg. Who knows how he’s feeling tonight or if he can sleep? If I did that to another human being I’d feel that I would never want to play the game again. Here’s hoping that Eduardo recovers and plays again.

I think it is not a question of whether that retarded dude intended to take off Eduado’s leg or not, as some of you suggest.
Whether accidental or intentional, he probably ended someone’s career. There should be a very harsh punishment for this so as to send a strong message that football will not entertain such nonsense.
I don’t care whether that guy (I can’t even say his stupid name!!!!) is a saint or not. He needs to learn his lesson. Otherwise, we ll keep saying in future “I doubt whether Mr X I knew will do something like this”. Well, he did it. I ll hate to see that dumb captain play again. If he does, I ll have to turn off the TV.
By the way whats wrong with these small teams like Birmingham, Reading playing nasty. Remember Peter Czech’s incident too?
Good luck to Edu. Good luck to Arsenal.

Before anyone decides whether or not Taylor is innocent please look at this picture http://www.index.hr/images2/Taylorsenasmijesio.jpg
As far as I am concerned a lifetime ban isn’t enough and he should be locked up for such viciousness. If Eboue would have done the same thing and ended Rooneys career he would have been hung out to dry and noone would give him a leg to stand on but due to Eddy being a Arsenal player (a talented one at that) there are some ****** sitting at home saying it was a yellow card. How can a Premier League Player go in for a tackle with such venom to rip the mans foot off his leg and say that it was “clumsy” or “Eduardo was too quick” the player is earning thousands of pounds a week and think those are excuses? I think its ******** and I hope karma comes round to get him.
Good Luck Walking again Eddy and if you ever put the shirt back on I will be there to see it with the biggest smile.

I strongly condemn Alex Mcleish’s comments after the match and also Steve Bruce’s. What if it was the other way round? God forbid, but what if Taylor had his leg snapped by a tackle? I’m pretty sure that Alex Mcleish would have ‘dug’ into the opposing team’s player and manager.
This is just a very nasty tackle and this kind of behaviour needs to be abolished from the world of football along with racism. In my opinion, the game should have been called off due to the feeling and emotions of Arsenal’s players. Hleb, Fabregas, Adebayor, Gallas were all clearly shocked by the horrific injury and this affected their performance. Just imagine what Sagna was going through because prior to the game, his brother who was only 29 passed away. He played the game with personal heartache and when he saw Eduardo’s fate unveil before his own eyes; i’m pretty **** sure he was close to a breakdown.
Being an Arsenal supporter, i would like to take this opportunity to wish Eduardo Da Silva a speedy and full recovery and if all goes well i hope to see him play a live game in the future.

what’s worst is mcleish’s comments after the match.
“He is distraught” — Martin’s distraught about the lad’s injury,” rued the Scotsman.
“I need to see that again. He didn’t feel he made much contact with Eduardo.
LOOK AT THE BLEEPING PHOTOS/VIDEOS THEN MAKE THOSE COMMENTS. IDIOT COACH.
mcfaddens comments:
“I’m not so sure about [Taylor’s] tackle, I never really saw the tackle,” he revealed. “It was a terrible injury, I’ve seen his leg and it didn’t look too clever.
“You could see they were a bit shocked by it, we managed to go in the lead. We just have to get on with it when things like that happen.”
BHAM IS PLEASED WITH THE DRAW? THEY WERE SITTING IN THEIR OWN HALF FOR MOST OF THE GAME UNTIL THE LATE PENALTY. WHICH WAS BOGUS BC CLICHY GOT THE BALL.

Think the Ref saw the injury and then decided on the red card. Possibility some refs would have just given a yellow if it hadn’t been so bad an injury. Safest place for taylor was off the pitch anyway as the arsenal players would have been takin chunks out of him. Hope eduardo recovers and manages to play again.

I am amazed that people are able to even mock something as horrible as this. Taylor with complete intention to foul Eduardo-although not injury him for life I believe- and stop the forward progress of play. It was and hellishly high one footed studs showing tackle and Taylor should be banned at least till May. Taylor was intentionally fouling and should take the consequences for his action.
Eduardo best of luck in recovery, a real shame about Euro 08- Arsenal at the top still
heres to the fair play and the rest of the season

All you saying Taylor should be banned are talking rubbish.
Tackles like that happen every week and players get a warning from the ref. I feel for eduardo but it was never intentional just really unlucky.
Do any of u remember the roy keane tackle/kick on the man city player? That ended his career should he have been banned?? No ur all talking rubbish. I watched the game live and it looked like a normal poor tackle no malice or intent. The ref wasnt even going to book him until he saw the leg was all floppy.
Anyway i hope we can see the genius of eduardo once more but shut up about banning taylor. Ban eboue he is one dirty player, He broke Terrys foot ban him. Ban terry he broke Rooneys foot!! See my point???

Just accept that it was a horrendous tackle. The comments from McLeish etc are irrelevant. He did what he did. And then he was grinning while standing over Eduardo. This kind of tackle should be punished with a half season ban. Then this thuggery might be removed from football.

You never need to go into a tackle with studs showing. so to me that was intential.!!Players like Taylor know who is a threat in the opposing team and are told to make the first tackle count. He made it count alright.!! He should be banned for such a tackle. Shame!!

Look at the video again Davo, he is clearly looking at the ball and making a move to get the ball from a STANDING position. In that moment (this is where the timing comes in) Eduardo changes the direction of the ball and his leg replaces the postion of the ball causing Martin’s foot to make contact just above his ankle.

He has left his foot in & not really made any attenmpt to soften the impact, whether his was due to his poor vision of the incident as eduardo is so quick we will not know. Either a player has poor visual awareness when he makes a hard shape & leaves it in place, or he means to leave it in hard & cause damage. There was definately enough weight to the tackle to physically cut through a leg & make contact with the ground.
The extent of the injury looks pretty severe I wish Eduardo a full recovery,
I think Taylor, & perhaps Birmingham, should be made liable to cover some of the cost of Eduardo’s rehabilitation. Just as I think people who make horendous challenges or punch someone at grassroutes level of the game should liable to face charges for assualt. In certain cases if a tackle was deemed premeditated I would consider it harsh enough for a charge of criminal assult.
In this case, I would feel the ref & fourth offical’s report should be reviewed very seriously, & the replay footage analysed in view toward taking the most apprropriate action based on the analysis of this evidence. The verdict should decide some osrt of tone for what can be expected for players who must indulge in needlessly overagressive/dangerous tackles.

The tackle does not deserve a red. That is an act of bad refereeing. The ref was giving a yellow, when he saw the seriousness of the injury, and decided to give a red instead. A ref should punish base on the tackle, not on the seriousness of the tackle, and that is not a tackle which deserve red. BUT!, my heart goes to Eduardo. He broke his foot in a game, and tribute should be given to him. If not for his socks and shinguards, i bet his feet will be somewhere else after the tackle. Really, that tackle is serious mis-tackle and his career might jus be over. If you guys watched the video, i think Taylor doesn’t really mind being sent off because he really thought from the bottom of his heart, that the injury is too serious for a soccer match. It was a clumbsy high challenge and probably should be a few match ban but as has been stated earleir Taylor went for the ball and screwed it up, it was not intentional to injure the player. There have been many worse challenges that could have resulted in similar or even worse injuries this season (all the 2 footed challenges). I think this injury happened because Taylor started from standing and eduardo had no chance to get out of the way like some of the two footed tackles. All in all not the worst challenge I have seen but definately the worst injury. Get well soon Eduardo.

+ just to add that a professional player who makes a tackle should know & be able to judge on an impact as to whether to take force away from his tacle when it meets flesh rather than ball. Having had my head split open by some leaving their leg in when collecting a ball from someone’s feet as a gk I feel that a professional player should not really in any tackle, especially in the case of a slide tackle, be leaving any more force/weight it it than is strictly nessecary to move a BALL (a light round object that mainly comprises of AIR.)
not as much enegry/foce as will cleave through a leg.

JOhn/bUrg as he was standing he couldnt have left with that much force i’d guess gravity played some part in it meaning it was pretty much his whole body weight rather than the force he went in to the tackle with as he was coming down on Eduardo. Which he obviously could’t control once he left his feet.

Interesting, yes I suppose specifically a tackle when you are coming DOWN on someone might have to be paid specific attention to in terms of a players technique. From a coaching perspective (& one that I hope would be enforced by the FA it’s referees / officials of the game) - advise players not to use that much force / weight especially from lunging tackles from a static position.
I suppose in a tackle from a static position, rather than a tackle made at speed you are unleashing a short ’start-stop’ burst of energy, in this case ending in a downforce, rather than at speed trying to get a knick on the ball, generally from the side.
I suppose, given that the tackle from behind is already banned, that this demonstrates that the tackles which can have the worst consequences in terms of injury now come from a lunging tackles from a static position that comes at a 90 degree angle against one who is travelling with pace or changing direction. Either way this is a grave technical error from the player /coaches involved.
I think the analysis of video evidence & the referee, linesman & fourth offical’s reports will great interest,& also the FA’s official response in terms of their stance taken on this kind of ‘lunge’, but from my perspective, of that of a futsal player / coach, Taylor left his feet to make a challenge with his momentum taking him DOWN WARD with no control over force, from a perpendicular angle… well, everythings wrong with it technically!

guys, do u realize martin taylor is a PROFESSIONAL football player? ur not called a professional player if u misjudge every tackle u do.
come on, u say it was a half hearted lunge from taylor? wow, wat kind of half hearted lunge was that, flying thorugh MID AIR and sliding his cleats down eduardo’s leg as eduardo was brought down…
dude, if it was any half hearted lunge at all, taylor wouldnt hav flown through the air at all because ANY decent footballer would know that either he was going to win the ball, which was unlikely, or eduardo was going to get injured (seriously). if u were a footballer, since when would we want to threaten to end another player’s career?
i myself am a defender but i NEVER try to fly thorugh mid-air at players with my sleats raised because any moron knows that the victim is going to get really, really injured.

Definitely a Red PLUS some form of long term ban. That said I don’t believe that Taylor came into the tackle with intent to hurt Eduardo. I believe he was just PLAIN STUPID, CLUMSY and IDIOTIC and for that he deserves a ban.

idk but he didnt even show if anth was wrong, he was sarcastic. when injury like this happens and its unconciously done, defender runs up to victim and apologizes and not smiles sarcasticly. so he deserved red and when ref saw that sarcasm in him thats y he got red at first place and eduardos career is over for few years and arsenal lost title… no v.persie … no eduardo… come on…
wish everything great to eduardo, to get well fast

hope he’ll recover soon.. but I do still believe Taylor went for the ball.. just very late and eduardo nick the ball really fast, but you could see that he’s going for the ball.. it’s just the wrong place the wrong time, it was not intentional. Well, the FA will at worst extend his ban to 5 matches and give him some fines..

first off arsenal 4 life b secondly bout 48 hrs prior 2 the game i got a letter from mr wenger himself wishing me well on my issues i was happy as **** but i wasnt feeling right anytime someone was speaking about the game shut the **** up or superstitious some people may say an that leads on 2 my third point i dont give a **** what people say the grin on his face tells a story how high does his leg have to be to make a tackle yes edu’s studs wer in the turf but that’s where its supposed to be taylors studs aren’t supposed to be in edu’s ankle/shin i dont think he went out to break a guys leg you cant do that you dont do that but players/teams do go out to kick teams off the park or make a hard tackle so it was bound to happen a ban for life is a bit harsh but i would not cry if he did because it would be more than warranted just like his red but we all know the fa or the premier league wont ban him for life 9 10 15 games is the most id say they’d ban him for but nothing will bring eduardo back for our next game i just hope my man edu can recover however long it takes it does look bleak considerin open fractures like david bussts the guy never recovered i know his was much more serious and he should of never played football with the last name he had lol but miracles happen

This is a horrific injury and I wish all the best for Eduardo. As for Taylor, I hope he reflects upon his action and not take it lightly. He was acting as if he got sent off for a routine tackle or something like that. This is a kind of injury that ends a person’s career. Wenger was acting understandably distraught of the incident. I believe the FA should look into this matter and send a strong signal to Taylor and the world that this kind of incident will not ever be tolerated. I wish all the best for Eduardo: be strong and we will see you play again soon. For Arsenal, focus on the championship race. Win it for Arsenal. Gallas and Wenger have to handle this matter as professionally as possible if they want to remain focused on this matter.

This reminds me of something in American football. Many of you may know about when Lawrence Taylor (kind of ironic ey) destroyed Joe Theisman’s leg in a game… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i_bJv_0z-k
The one major difference between the two was after the play L. Taylor saw the injury, and cried for help and medical attention from the sideline. On the other hand Martin Taylor was grinning and walking away like nothing had happened. Martin’s actions are quite a disgrace to football, and sadly shows no respect for Eduardo and his pain now and in the future; if he can never play again. Lawrence Taylor said he could never watch a reply of that play and maybe someone should show Martin Taylor his poor tackle a few times. Its a real tragedy and hopefully one day he realize the true horror and pain he caused, and I hope he has at least had the class to apologize by now. Also, don’t wish pain or death upon Taylor, just hope he gets the right punishment, suspension, and fine for justice.
By the way Joe Theissman has never blamed Lawrence Taylor for his injury and neither should Eduardo; it was a poor/bad tackle, and I’m not sure it was with malice, buts it is a sport and to play is a risk you take. People get injure on clean tackles let alone poor ones.

In this kind of case its not whether you go in with bad intent or not, its the outcome. Taylor went into the tackle but Eduardo was to good for him, he out skilled him and Taylors tackle broke his leg. That has to be a straight red. Intent or not at the end of the day he put in a horrific tackle that could ruin Eduardo’s career.

Even though the challenge was absolutely horrifying, there’s no need to ask for Taylor’s ankle to be broken for his actions: you are pretty much convicting him for an unexpected accident; it was simply a very, very unlucky and consequential tackle that may end Eduardo’s career and has given Taylor a bad name.
I wish him the best of luck for recovery and hope he returns.

Dear all who are mentioning
Half Tackles,
Half Strength,
Maybe not for yellow card
Not running 15-20 yards
and so on please replace in next picture:
Player X has ball 30 yards away from goal
Player X controls the ball on the ground
Player Y tries to get to the ball tackling Player X 5 inches bellow knee (15 inches above playground)
Player X suffered opened fracture (foot almost amputated).
replace Player X with Rooney or Beckham
and
replace Player Y with any otherfootball player name.
Well, you may continue discussion where player Y tackle is for yellow card or not and so on.
I hope, for benefit of all of as humans that those guys, discussing in abouve mentioned way, do not have children to teach them about morality, sympathy and fair play.

- If this happened to Rooney, Gerrard or Lampard I would still wants smash Taylors face in.
- Before you start arguing about 1 foot or foot tackles or he wasn’t running get your facts straight it dont take much to break someone leg and end a footballers career.
- Watch when we play those **** again, you will see how we will return the favour to Taylor, thats of course if the In-bred tossers are in the prem league next season.

To any idiot out there who has called for Taylor to be killed, injured or banned:
you are fools. you or I play football, knowing the risks of such an injury. I play rugby week in week out as well; a game in which many people die annually.
If you get injured so horrifically - as Eduardo’s injury is - it is never simple or emotionless. Indeed, it is shocking.
However, footballers - any sports man in fact - know the risks they run. Injuries such as this are part of the game. I watched the exact same thing happen to a friend in a play ground football game years ago. We didn’t try and kill or ban the other young lad - who was so shocked and saddened by the injury he inflicted.
If Taylor had intent - something which I very much doubt, seeing as he is a professional running the same risks as Eduardo and this was very early on in a rather annonymous game - then I would encourage a greater punishment.
There was no intent. Badly timed - yes. With the purpose to snap legs and ankles? NO.
So you absolute idiots out there who post on here calling for Taylor to “die die die” or to be banned for ever, please take your mindless drivel and keep it in your very small brains.
To Eduardo - my best wishes for a clean, swift recovery to full health. I hope you have the metal and physical strenght and support you will need.
To Taylor - do not listen to idiots. Every footballer makes ill-timed or rash challenges; you are unlucky that your’s had such consequences. It was bad, but use this to learn and improve. Ignore idiots.

You are right about bad comments on Taylor.
He does not deserve those sick whishes (die, kill …)
but he deserves to be punished and not only for game or two.
Taylor had enough time to understand he will never catch the ball.
Instead of getting leg back he raised it up.
Why?
That is something only Taylor knows.
Leave that to his nights and dreams.
I strongly disagree with your comment about sport.
Sport like life contains PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for acts (includes tackles).
Sportsman is not BULL TERRIER without emotions for oponent.
If someone hits you with car on the street his punishment is that he can not drive car until he repair it?
ONLY BECAUSE YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT WHILE WALKING ON THE STREET YOU CAN BE HIT BY THE CAR?
Wow
PS
I do not think Taylor did it with intention to break the leg.

Mike,
you are wrong. All players of any sport are removed of some degree of responsibility for their actions. The minute they take to the pitch this is the case.
This is why when any players (ice hockey, rugby, football, even tennis) fight and ‘assult’ one another they are not criminally charged. This is reflected in the way the judiciary ignore such behaviour in sport and do not convict sportsplayers for on-field conduct.
For instace, Joey Barton was arrested for assult in a night club, but has never been for hitting a player in the face whilst playing for Man City, as I remember him doing a while back.
Your example of the car driver hitting a person, therefore, is wrong.
All sportsplayers have some degree of responsibility - legally - removed when they partake in their sport.
This does not, however, warrant or should not encourage sever misconduct or malicious play.
Indeed, any player in any sport who is judged to have behaved in such a way is rightly punished by the sports official governing bodies.
Taylor was punished for his poorly timed challenge with a red card. He will be banned for three games, if I am not mistaken. I don’t doubt that the tackle, being as late as it was, deserves such a punishment.
However, the consequences - such a visually and physically horrific injury - do not mean Taylor deserves a great ban.
Martin Petrov was fortunate to dodge a similar lunge from a Blackburn player a few games ago. He could have had the same injury. The B’burn player received a yellow card for the challenge. He didn’t get that punishment changed or increased by the governing bodies because they believed the potential injury could have been so terrible.
As such, Taylor’s punishment should stand. It is sufficient. His tackle was poor. He recieved the appropriate sanction. Eduardo’s injury being so terrible shouldn’t mean that he gets even more punishment. There was equal chance Eduardo could have not been injured so badly. The challenge would have still been the same - but Taylor’s red card ban would not have, in this case, been extended.
I agree, Taylor should have been given the red card. However, using the severity of the injury to justify increasing the punishment, when the injury was the result of an accident (albeit from Taylor’s poor play) and not the result of an intentional attempt to create such injury, is wrong.

I feel really sorry for Eduardo because he himself isn’t an agressive player and doesn’t deserve this injury.
Again, Taylor isn’t a rough player - he’s just unlucky, a red card was the right punishment.
In the videos and pictures I’ve seen it looks as if his foot has actually snapped of, can anyone actually confirm the full extent of his injuries?
I hope he gets well soon, I’m not an Arsenal fan but no one deserves that injury.

Well Joe,
I can not disagree with you.
Problem with my way of writing is that my posts are surrounded with only black (kill) and white (give him a medal) comments so “I did not hit the spot”.
Also comparing with car accident was little bit “extreme case” (even it is correct), and I agree with that.
Whole idea was that sportsman like Taylor should not get away just with ordinary punishment, not because he is a butcher but because he has done something extremely bad.
As I stated before, I do not believe that it was intentional, but standard way of punishment explains to young sportsman that “anything is regular”.
Today’s lag brake, red card and three games. Tomorrow’s neck brake red card and few games.
This is wrong message to them.
Unfortunately, player (deliberately omitting Taylor) made something extremely wrong what is not in a spirit of the game and fair play.
He should try to pull back leg when he saw the ball is only a dream.
But he did not.
Instead he hit like Titanic to Ice Berg.
I am 46 year old professional player, suffered multiple fractures including head, arcades and arms, and guess … sport is not football, it is basketball. I have never hurt anyone, despite my 120 kilos, and in lots of challenges I have made a choice rather to be hurt then to hurt someone.
I am just talking that there has to be a message “NO MORE”, for good of our kids and next generation. Message that is telling even you are sportsman some thinks are OFF LIMITS.
Once, this message will be sent, there will be less incidents you mentioned.
Obviously Didulica (goalkeeper) case was not enough.
My post is here only to try to make sport better.
Regards

are you like a moron patrick? did you look at the shape of edurardo’s leg? at most a yellow card?…what a ******* you are. You should slap yourself
The shape of his leg is not the point, it is the tackle and the intent of the player. Sure the injury was terrible but do you think he meant to do that or was he just late. If you actually watch the highlight you can see Taylor was just a little late and was very close to playing the ball, there would be no reason to take out the player in that situation. A ban would be ridiculous

For “canada boy” - I agree, they looked awful afterwards. Good that you call Theo ‘Theo’ and not Walcott. I used to go to school with Theo (in Compton), and it always sounds weird, and looks really strange to think someone I went to school with is now making $$$ and playing for arsenal!
But good job on him, first 2 goals in the premiership, hopefully not the last.
And that tackle was awful I agree, but I mean there was no malliscious intent. A red card, agreed, but it was fairly obvious there was no intention of damage from the defender.

taking away a leg of a soccer player is like cutting off the hands of an artist. it ** CKs up their career. eduardo was JUST getting in the groove of the arsenal beat, now he won’t be able to play. not angry at taylor, cuz it could’ve been anyone, and like the commentator said, he’s just a dumb clutz.
my heart goes out to eduardo

While the red card was necessary I have become reconciled to the idea that a 3-game ban is sufficient.
One incredibly unlucky part of this story is that Taylor is apparently the opposite of the storied ‘hard man’ of english football. Check out his press clippings– Graeme Souness lamented six years ago that he was too nice to make it to the top level; said he was the perfect son-in-law but that wasn’t what he wanted on his team! His nickname is ‘the gentle giant.’ Who knows– his manager may have told him to stick his foot in against Arsenal if wanted to keep his place in the starting lineup– we’ll never know. But he does seem the last guy in the league to set out to purposely clatter Eduardo.
The reality is everywhere he goes the rest of his life the whisper will follow him– he’ll always be the guy who destroyed Eduardo’s career. They’ll be talking behind his back in the pub when he’s seventy-five and sitting there finishing a pint. That will be punishment enough.

too many of you arsenal fans forget that you are a dirty team, So dont keep going on about taylor. That tackle flamini done against nani at old trafford was just as bad. Flamini actually went for nani then and if he hadnt of jumped out of the way then nani could have broken his leg.
