London Derbies dominate the fixture list
After the midweek Carling Cup matches that produced some glaring upsets, its back to another grueling weekend of premiership action.
The weekend kicks off with the much anticipated clash between Manchester City and Newcastle United, two teams who unexpectedly find themselves near the top of the table. Without doubt, these teams have been the surprise packages of the season after languishing in mid-table last year. The success of these teams can be largely attributed to their new managers, Sven-Goran Eriksson and ‘Big Sam’ Allardyce who have reinvigorated their squads. Both teams come into this game after unflattering performances in the cup, Newcastle going out to the in-form Arsenal and City only just squeezing past Norwich. This one promises to be a mouth-watering contest!
Later in the afternoon, Liverpool face a struggling Wigan team at the JJB stadium, desperately missing their England striker, Emile Heskey. Wigan come into this game with just two points and three goals from their five previous league outings. Liverpool’s great start to the season has been damped by a string of dull premierships draws. However, a morale boosting 4-2 victory at Reading in the Carling Cup which saw their super-signing Torres score a hattrick is the ideal preparation for this must-win game.
London will be drenched in passion on Saturday as the four capital-based premier league teams lock horns. The young stars of Arsenal go up against the ‘Hammers’ at Upton Park in what promises to be a stiff-test of the Gunners unbeaten record this season. Manager Arsene Wenger can take some comfort from the recent form of the Hammers, a crushing loss to the Magpies and an injury time victory against championship side Plymouth in the cup. Alan Curbishley knows his team will have to raise their game to get a result against the premiership leaders and we can expect a tough match with crunching tackles and bookings aplenty.

Avram Grant will lead the Chelsea team against Fulham in the other London derby in his first game at Stamford Bridge following the departure of Jose Mourinho. Chelsea fans have persistently voiced their displeasure at the shock exit of the ‘Special One’ for over two weeks and Grant can expect an unfriendly welcome at the Bridge. After the ill-tempered loss at Old Trafford, the new manager got his first victory with an impressive four goal drubbing of Hull in the cup. Fulham are just one point above the drop zone with just a solitary victory to their name after a terrible start to the season. However, Grant knows his side can have no room for complacency as he begins his uphill battle to win the hearts of Chelsea fans.
The Saturday evening game will feature the current premier league champions, Manchester United facing off against newly promoted Birmingham City. The champions will be looking to make amends after they were unceremoniously dumped from the Carling Cup by mid-table championship side Coventry. Although many changes were made to the side that clinically beat Chelsea only three days ago, there was no excuse for the abysmal performance of the players as Coventry became the first championship side to beat United at Old Trafford in over twelve years. Given that Birmingham are short of confidence after they were soundly beaten by Blackburn in their Carling Cup tie, they might well be on the receiving end of United’s fury.
Having finished in the top five in the two previous seasons, many believed that this would finally be the season that Tottenham break into the top four of English Football. However, seven games into the new season and Martin Jol finds his team in the bottom three scrapping for relegation. The calls for the manager to step down have only been gaining momentum as positive results continue to elude Jol’s men. This week they face Aston Villa, managed by former Celtics boss, Martin O’Neill at White Hart Lane. Having won their midweek Carling Cup tie against Middlesbrough, Jol will hope that they can carry this momentum into their premier league weekend fixture.
Three mid-table clashes round up the list of weekend fixtures; Roy Keane’s Sunderland host Blackburn Rovers at the Stadium of Light while Reading travel to Fratton Park to face Portsmouth. Ninth placed Everton host Middlesbrough, a side four places below them and manager David Moyes will demand nothing less than the full three points after his side’s inconsistent start to the season.
There’s plenty to look forward to this week – from the intense passion and rivalry of the derby matches to the scrappy and hard-fought battles in mid-table. The Premier League never fails to serve up something to quench the thirst of every football fan. One thing is for certain: a certain ‘Special One’ will be closely monitoring the game at Stamford Bridge as his successor surely faces a frosty welcome.
