Match Review: Man Utd vs Sunderland

Substitute Louis Saha marked his season debut with a vital winning goal as United struggled to beat Roy Keane’s team, Sunderland.
Quick link: Highlights including post match interviews and analysis.
Former Manchester United player, Roy Keane returned to Old Trafford but it was a no sentimental return for him, it was business as usual, and as he said in an interview, “Expect no hugs and kisses”. A host of former United players returned to Old Trafford such as Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole who was as a spectator due to an injury.
Before the action, both teams assembled into a guard of honour for Ole Gunner Solskjaer whom he retired completely from football this week. The veteran striker received a big applause from his team mates, Sunderland squad and from all of the 4 corners in ground, which it was a very sentimental moment for everyone.
But now back to action – Anderson made his 1st debut in a competition for United whom he was the latest debutant in attack. Tevez, Nani and Hargreaves all started the match with Chris Eagles too. Ryan Giggs was missing after he picked up a hamstring strain in Friday’s training. Michael Carrick was sidelined.
Keeper Craig Gordon was forced into a trio of decent saves, denying Tevez, Eagles and Scholes, but the Scotland keeper could hardly claim to have been extended by the limited bombardment on his goal.
Anderson and Tevez made no effect in the attack, and it was in the 46th minute that Alex Ferguson introduced Saha for Anderson and everyone knew that it has to be Saha to save Manchester United.
Danny Higginbotham, one of four former United players in the visitors’ squad, was at full stretch to prevent Saha getting on the end of Rio Ferdinand’s long ball. Tevez was onto the loose ball in a flash but could not beat Gordon from 20 yards.
The Sunderland keeper was now heavily involved and he produced his best save of the match to turn away Saha’s volley after the Frenchman had spun off Higginbotham.
Saha then claimed a penalty after going to ground under pressure from Higginbotham, while those claims were reprised for a handball by Collins four minutes from time.
Hargreaves and Darren Fletcher wasted late chances to double United’s lead at the end but with Cristiano Ronaldo and, possibly, Wayne Rooney available for the trip to Everton in a fortnight, Ferguson will just be glad to have the points in the hope of better to come in the months that lie ahead.
