Milan gained revenge for their 2005 Champions League final defeat at the hands of Liverpool as they lifted the trophy in Athens with a 2-1 victory.
Highlights
45' Kaka goes down easily on the edge of the penalty area and Alonso is penalised. A dangerous position, 24 yards out and central, and Andrea Pirlo's free-kick is deflected past Reina by Inzaghi and into the middle of the net. The striker knew nothing about it, a complete fluke but Milan have the lead against the run of play
82' Kaka threds a precise ball through to Inzaghi who tucks the ball under the advancing Reina to win the Champions League for Milan.
89' A glimmer for Liverpool as a corner is flicked on by Carragher and Kuyt nods home from close range. A hint of offside but it sets up an exciting conclusion.
Wonderful Opportunity for Gerrard 62' But Dida makes a crucial save. The Liverpool skipper picks up on a loose ball, drives past Nesta but is unable to open up his body enough to curl the ball into the far corner from the left channel and the big keeper gets down to preserve his side's lead.
Champions League - Apparently there's some sort of football match taking place this evening…
After the drama of 2005, this year's Champions League final between Liverpool versus Milan is bound to be dull as ditchwater. With that in mind, we have cobbled together a few pieces of inane trivia with which to entertain your friends.
- Greek organisers will fly light aircraft above the stadium all day in an attempt to "scare off" rain clouds. No doubt there is some dubious science behind this ploy, but if you ask us (which you almost certainly won't) it sounds just a bit ridiculous.
- So much for the patriotic pound. Bookmakers are reporting a massive gamble on Milan, with five or six bets on the Italian side for every wager on Liverpool. They are 11/8 to win inside 90 minutes, with the Reds generally available at 2-1. (See below for our bet of the day)
- Jermaine Pennant looks likely to play in something of a surprise selection. But is it? The winger has played 51 games this season, more than any other Liverpool player. According to the club's official website, Xabi Alonso, Jamie Carragher, Pepe Reina and 'Steven Gerrard MBE' all have 50 appearances. (more…)
