Manchester United scored three times in the first six minutes to reach the English FA Cup quarter-finals with a 3-2 win over Reading on Tuesday. Gabriel Heinze, Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer all scored in the fifth-round replay at the Madejski Stadium. The Red Devils withstood a late surge from Reading, which missed the chance to push the game into extra time when Brynjar Gunnarsson hit the crossbar in injury time.
Goals from Gabriel Heinze, Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the opening five and a half minutes put United in complete control.
However, Reading hit back through Dave Kitson, and a late Leroy Lita header set up a frantic finish during which Brynjar Gunnarsson struck the crossbar.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side picked up their third win in a week after victories against Lille and Fulham, but another ragged display had the Scotsman fuming.
So rattled were the Premiership leaders that they were forced to introduce Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo from the bench late on in an attempt to stem the tide of Reading attacks.
It was a far cry from the opening, which saw Heinze open the scoring within two minutes with a long-range effort that squirmed under the body of Adam Federici.
The Royals played so well in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, the reserve goalkeeper's blunder was a shame, and within two minutes he was picking the ball out of his net again. (more…)
