Chelsea win Cardiff thriller

February 25th, 2007 . posted by admin

A Didier Drogba brace gave Chelsea a 2-1 win over Arsenal in an eventful Carling Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Theo Walcott put Arsenal ahead but Drogba won a match which saw John Terry carried off with a serious head injury and three players sent off after a mass injury-time brawl.

The match was tarnished by the injury to Terry – which saw the England and Chelsea captain carried off unconscious in a neck brace and taken straight to hospital in Cardiff after Abou Diaby's boot caught him sickeningly in the face when he stooped to attack a corner on 56 minutes.

Emanuel Adebayor, Mikel John Obi and Kolo Toure were sent off for their part in a mass brawl during the lengthy injury time period, an incident which also should have seen Frank Lampard and Cesc Fabregas dismissed. Toure reacted angrily after a challenge with Obi which prompted most of the players on the pitch to pile in, Lampard and Fabregas grabbing each other's throats while Adebayor appeared to swing a punch at Wayne Bridge.

But, in addition to the fighting, the oft-maligned League Cup was blessed by a final which had all the drama of a classic – goals, controversial decisions, near-misses, and serious injury.

The North Londoners started the brightest, Fabregas, Jeremie Aliadiere and Julio Baptista all going close, the latter forcing an excellent 11th minute save by Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal with a rising drive through the legs of Terry.

And the Gunners went ahead soon afterwards, an excellent turn and through ball by Abou Diaby freeing Walcott (pictured) who took his chance with aplomb in a Henry-esque finish for his first senior goal for the club on 12 minutes.

Arsenal thought they had a claim for a penalty on the quarter hour when Baptista went down under a challenge from Lassana Diarra but Howard Webb was correct in waving the claim away.

But Chelsea equalised against the run of play, Michael Ballack spotting Drogba on the right and lofting the ball to him, the Premiership's top scorer rifling the finish through Manuel Almunia's legs. Replays showed that Drogba could have been flagged offside, but Webb was not sure and gave the Ivory Coast star the benefit of the doubt.

The sides traded chances before the break when Jose Mourinho made one of his trademark half-time substitutions, bringing on Arjen Robben for Claude Makelele.

And the Dutch winger almost had an immediate impact, a great run and pass almost releasing Andriy Shevchenko but just too quick for the misfiring Ukraine striker.

Diaby almost scored a second for Arsenal that was identical to their opener, but Cech made his second superb save of the afternoon to tip his finish around for a corner, while Fabregas sent a low drive inches wide of the Czech stopper's right-hand post.

Robben himself went close for Chelsea before Terry's injury – which delayed the match by six minutes before he was secured and carried off in a neck-brace – left Michael Essien to play reluctant centre half yet again.

Lampard sent a glorious 30 yard strike hammering off the crossbar ten minutes after play resumed, while Toure somehow headed a corner over the near post when left totally unmarked five minutes later.

And it was Chelsea who took the initiative on 84 minutes when – after Arsenal over-complicated playing the ball out of defence – Robben flighted a pinpoint cross onto the head of Drogba who directed his bullet header into the bottom right of the goal to send Chelsea's travelling support delirious.

Shevchenko was quiet again but almost put the tie to bed when he smashed a stunning rising drive off the bar from the edge of the box as the 90 minutes wound down and – despite playing 12 minutes of additional time due to Terry's injury and the 93rd-minute brawl that saw even Mourinho and Arsene Wenger take to the pitch – Chelsea held on for their first trophy of the season.

But JT’s bad luck? oh my. I’m not saying there’s a foul there. but he was just recovering and still put his head into the action. That’s sheer courage!
