it's funny how people who don't know the laws of the game attack man utd and giggs. lille should have forced man utd to ask for 10 by starting their wall closer to the spot of the foul. that would cause the restart to be initiated by a whistle. also, the entire walk-off incident, pathetic. lille should be punished along with the coach/trainer who held on to the football to prevent the game from continuing.

David - D it is obvious that you hate United and that you think that the goal should not have stood, but had it been your team you would be hailing Giggs for his quick thinking. I have seen Henry score goals in the exact same fashion at least three times, one of which was against Chelsea a couple of years ago. But if your going to oppose the goal, at least have some legit arguments. Other people have already explained it to you but you don't seem to understand the rules, so I'll give it a go.

When the ref blows his whistle to indicate that there was a foul, it is the only time he needs to. Unless the team awarded the free kick (in this case United) asks for 10 yards. Giggs did not ask for it so he is allowed to take it when ever he wants.

I respect Tony from comment 46 because he has not allowed his disdain for a team cloud his vision of what is a perfectly and cleverly taken goal. Rules are rules and they should be applied the same to every situation. As much as it pissed me off when Henry scored the quick free kick against Chelsea to tie the game and continue Arsenal's undefeated (I think it was that season and I think the game finished 2-2) season it was a perfectly legal goal.

So David - D use a bit of maturity and suck it up. Besides whether you agree with the goal or not it the ref thought it was legal, UEFA thinks it is legal (I think their interpretation of the rules is a little more important than yours) and the result stands. Beside the reaction of the Lille coaching staff should be of more concern to you as a football fan than the goal. The coach who told the players to get off the pitch should be sacked and any other coach on that bench who supported him.
